Large generous servings. Top quality ingredients. Inspired dishes on the menu.
Case in point: Spiced pumpkin salad with baby beets, du puy lentils, crumbed goats feta, trail mix, tendrils, pickled onions and beetroot vinaigrette. or the Crisp skin pork belly, chilli lime prawns with parsnip, green beans, currants and apple cider jus.
Priced at around $20, these were 'main' sized. And came out looking as pretty as a picture. Every tendril & leaf pert and upright.
I unexpectedly surprised on my visit here.
Having previously read reviews before going, I had expected a high quality cafe. I got much much more....
To begin with the menu is a lot more extensive, with a range of large, medium, small & share plates - their intention is to cater for much more than the breakfast/brunch market.
As for the food itself, it is very well executed and great value for money. They do not skimp on the quality or generosity of servings.
To round out the experience, there is no undue hype about this place. Much too often, a decent cafe becomes too popular/over hyped, and it has the potential to ruin the experience.
The food was good. The service and atmosphere really lacking. We had to say 5 times in quick succession that we just wanted a minute to look at the menus before we decided on a drink. A change in the order to accommodate my wife's pregnancy was only done under sufferance. Did not feel happy and friendly. We didn't have a booking and the way we were treated was as if we were second class citizens. Pretension but no wow.
Been there for both brunch and dinner. It transforms quite nicely from a cute cafe to a cosy dining spot by the evening. Friendly attentive staff. Food is tasty and portions are moderately sized. On the expensive side for a cafe.
Approximate cost: $30
The food is admittedly pretty good and the menu is fairly eclectic. The servings sizes are ok but definitely not generous. Coffee is also ok but nothing to write home about.
The decor is very funky - I got the feeling that they spent a bit too much on decorating the place and as a result they are understaffing to make up for it. Service takes a while and they've possibly crammed a few too many tables in the place.
Bottom line: in an area like Kew/Hawthorn, there are other places with better service, bigger portions and better coffee for the same price.
Approximate cost: $20
