This review is for The Soap Shed, Balranald NSW

verified email - 05 Jun 2012

The Soap Shed is situated 5 kms from Balranald on the right hand side of the main highway to Mildura. A short drive through the gates to the Coogee Homestead. On approaching, the door of a shed opens to reveal an array of aromatic goodies. There are handmade soaps, lotions, creams and soy wax candles together with handmade baby clothing, embroidered towels and a host of other items all at quite reasonable prices. Well worth a look if you are in the area.

We went into this information centre to get some memorabilia and souvenirs from the area. On selecting our choices and fronting the counter, we were attended to by a remarkably friendly, talkative and helpful young lady. She told us of a number of scenic views and places of interest to visit whilst in Balranald and also gave us other snippets of information regarding the surrounding area. She also asked us if we would like to look over the old Balranald gaol the key to which was available at the counter. We accepted her invitation. She also asked us to make sure that there was no one left in the establishment when we re locked the door to return the key. A very worthwhile and informative visit.

This review is for The Book Boys, Ingle Farm SA

We have been into the Book Boys store at Ingle Farm a number of times and have found that the staff there are very friendly, obliging and helpful. A couple of times we have been unable to find a book that we were wanting so on asking at the counter the lady immediately consulted the computer and told us that the book was available and that she could order it for us. This she did and in about a week we were advised that the book was in the store awaiting pick up. Great service, good range of books and can source books not in stock.

Situated on the foreshore of Boston Bay this hotel offers spectacular views of the bay whilst dining in pleasant surroundings. The meal specials are very reasonable - we had pizzas which were the best I have tasted in quite a while (other than our local pizza place) plenty of filling, good variety and served hot and promptly. The house wine was more than reasonably priced and the whole experience was just what a group of pensioners are seeking when on a limited budget. Great atmosphere, great service and great meal and wine, we will definitely be dining at this establishment next time we visit Port Lincoln.

This review is for Ritz Cafe, Tumby Bay SA

verified email - 19 May 2012

The Ritz Cafe is situated right on the foreshore ensuring a wide view of the bay whilst enjoying a coffee or a meal. It is a cosy little cafe with an outside area for the warmer days. The service was prompt and friendly. The only drawbacks were that the toilet was out of order the day we were there and the place was advertised as an information centre but the information contained there in was very sparse and limited. I am quite sure that the meals served here are adequate if going by the dishes we saw other people having, we just had a coffee.

Called in for lunch whilst staying in Tumby Bay for a couple of days and took some time to decide what we were going to order from a myriad of hamburgers, sandwiches locally caught fish etc. We finally opted for a family pack consisting of 4 pieces of fish, 4 dim sims, 4 potato cakes and $4 worth of chips and a bottle of drink for a very reasonable cost of $25. We thought this was a great deal and more than enough to satisfy the four of us. There are also cold drinks and hot beverages, chicken packs and much more. They also cater for the fisherman with fishing supplies. Whilst having you meal you can gaze at the waters of the bay through the spacious windows, this location being right on the sea front. Spectacular and picturesque.

Just another superb country bakery. 'The best little bakery in town' sums it up admirably. The variety of wares is just astonishing with over 20 varieties of pies, pasties and sausage rolls. Also a range of yeast buns, slices and sweets and all products are hand made. Also available are fresh sandwiches, cold drinks and hot beverages. The perfect place to stop when the pangs of hunger overtake you on your journey to venues further up the river. The service is sometimes a tad slow but this can be expected in such a popular eatery. We will be returning.

This is a typical country information centre with all the guff on local and nearby points of interest and places to see and things to do. Looking around the venue there are racks of pamphlets and brochures on various pastimes, recreational walks and trails, fishing spots etc, together with souvenirs of Port Lincoln and nearby towns. The counter staff are very friendly and knowledgeable and are only too happy to point out the local walking trails, scenic drives and other points of interest on the free map of the local area. Good, helpful and interesting information can be gleaned from this establishment.

This review is for Tumby Bay Branch Museum, Tumby Bay SA

verified email - 16 Apr 2012

The last time we were in Tumby Bay was about 40 years ago and we then stayed at friends of the family in Spencer Street. Obviously during the ensuing years the house had been demolished and the area revamped. The Museum had records of the family and their offspring detailed in their records. They also had records of the wife of a friend of ours who was the daughter of a couple who owned the Tumby Bay hotel. We also heard a story of a haunted house when we were last here. The house was between Tumby and Port Lincoln. There was a record of the house in question and its subsequent demise because of a bushfire in the 1970s and the reconstruction of a similar house some years later. We also found an entry of one of our deceased neighbours from back in Adelaide having been born in Tumby Bay. All this information was located in the records and archives by Pat Carr, with each topic listed in an appropriate index which made reference to another book which contained the information. This place and Pat, who has lived in Tumby all of her life, contained a mine of historical, interesting and educational data and information all of which is backed op on several computers in various other locations in Tumby Bay. This is great to know just in case any unexpected and untoward mishap should befall this establishment then all this memorabilia and history will not be completely lost. This place is well worth a visit, who knows you might uncover some information regarding someone you know or knew.

This review is for Seabreeze Hotel, Tumby Bay SA

verified email - 16 Apr 2012

The Seabreeze Hotel at Tumby Bay seems almost unchanged outwardly in 40 years, and is situated on the shores of Tumby Bay on the picturesque Eyre Peninsular. There have obviously been many changes over the years as the interior of the dining room is exquisitely adorned with nautical themes. The dining room is roomy and bright and at night, tastefully dimly lit with bright features. The menu has a good array of food including locally harvested sea food. There are also half serves and a kids menu available for those with smaller appetites, all at very reasonable prices and wine is available from the ample range of wines from the wine list also at reasonable prices. A glorious place to sit and relax and have a meal with a good bottle of wine and gaze at the never ending view of the sea through the spacious windows of the Seabreeze Hotel. What a way to go.
