I am a pensioner and go out with a friend most Fridays. Sometimes we wish to go out locally for a meal and Blue Gum Cafe fits the bill. For me a 2 course meal (chicken parma with salad and chips, lemon meringue pie and a large capacchino for about $24) fits the bill. It is not the cheapest but for a meal (as opposed to a snack or light meal) I prefer ir. The servings are generous. I know that Seniors Meals are available for less but not in Monbulk (that I am aware of). This is probably because the ones I know of are attached to hotels, pubs or clubs and they can subsidise the cost with the purchase of drinks and pokies. The owners also know I drink a lot of water and they automatically give me a large bottle and 2 glasses. The staff stop and talk to us and as we frequent them they are getting to know us. I also go there for either a meal or morning or afternoon tea with other friends.
They have a selection of light and main meals, snacks and cakes and desserts. As far as I know they don't serve alcohol or are licensed as a BYO.

Approximate cost: $10 - 15

Though not cheap the costs reflect the quality of the several products I have purchased over time. I am on a disability pension so have little excess money to spare, but look to Diane before going elsewhere - except for books which I always buy for children. Diane is helpful and honest saying something (in my case earrings) did not suit me and if she can, she gets something in or looks into getting something that I am seeking. On one occasion I wanted to buy a chocker but it was too small so Diane got an extension so I could purchase it. Also, knowing my financial situation Diane has put items on layby for me. Some times I call in not to purchase anything but for a chat. For me cost, quality and service are all equally important. If one of these is low I either do not buy or in the case of a restaurant I do not return.
Diane is running a business so must make money but she is also aware that service is very important.
Also Diane supports local artisans by stacking their products (beauty products, jewellery and wheat sacks) as well as stocking products from 3rd world countries at a cost that reflects the true value of the product thus providing an income for these people to give them an improved quality of life.
It is a business I would recommend you visit especially for jewellery and winter clothing accessories (eg gloves, mittens and hats).
Thank you Diane for your excellent service and support as a friend.
