This review is for Salvos Store, Mt Hawthorn, Mount Hawthorn WA

A small, bright and cheery Salvos store that seems to be quite nicely laid out. They have a good range of men's and women's clothing, a small amount of bric-a-brac, and a very small children's section.

A good store if you're just wanting clothing, not if you're after furniture.

I visited Toyworld in Balcatta recently on the off-chance that they might have spare parts for our Hills Swing Set. The male staff member was really helpful and knowledgeable and I was able to get some equivalent parts (replacement seats) to keep our swing set in good working order, at a very modest price.

Bright, colourful and full of toys - just how a toy shop should be!

I visited Petstock in Balcatta to chase down some specialised dog food biscuits. The staff although helpful, were unable to provide any further information on the product than what I had clearly read from the label. My dog, however, didn't seem to mind on the new choice of biscuits.

They also offer discounts (with prior warning of sales) if you sign up to their free membership - so it was still a worthwhile visit.

Petstock carries a good range of products for all the little critters in your life!

This review is for McDonald's, Duncraig WA

I visit the McCafe at the Duncraig store occasionally, and have found the coffee to be pleasant tasting, easy drinking and hot! The "baristas" have usually been quite disinterested, but are reasonably efficient and I'm usually out of there within 10 minutes or so.

Recently however, I needed something to eat in a hurry, so I lined up in the restaurant section to order a burger and fries. I'm not sure what was happening that particular day, but there were only a few people in front of me, yet I ended up waiting 15 minutes before I could even place an order! By the time I had my meal and McCafe coffees takeaway, I had been in the store for over 25 minutes. Anyway, the burger, fries and coffee were all hot that day, just the service was a tad lacklustre.

Overall - a standard "McDonald's" experience, but the service could have been a little cheerier, and a little less tardy.

This review is for Chocolateria San Churro, Hillarys WA

Chocolate Heaven? Chocolate Overload? There's no denying that if you like (or love) chocolate, you will want to visit a Chocolateria San Churro.

My sister absolutely adores chocolate, I like chocolate, so we decided to have a "coffee" catch-up and try out the San Churro located in the Hillarys Boat Harbour. It was quite busy the day we visited and with my toddler on hand, I could only briefly peruse the menu board.

I decided to order what I thought was a "hot chocolate" drink, but I was in for a bit of a shock when my order was served (I ordered from their Spanish Hot Chocolate range the "Avellana (Hazelnut)"). I looked down to see what basically looked to me like melted chocolate in a cup - I had a sip - it was indeed divine - but there was absolutely no possible way I was going to be able to drink the entire cup....

Luckily, my sister took pity on me and swapped her "Milk Couverture" Hot Chocolate for mine. Phew - this was exactly what I'd meant to order and it was absolutely beautiful. My sister drank the rest of my cup of "Avellana", but even for her, it was hard going (it is very rich in texture).

We also ordered the "Churros for Two" (yummy Spanish "doughnuts") and these were superb! I am a huge caramel fan, though I'm extremely fussy about the type of caramel that I like to indulge in - but their pot of caramel for dipping with my Churros was delicious! My sister had some chocolate dipping sauce, but I was completely "sugared out" to taste test her one. She has told me it was wonderful!

The staff were pleasant enough, the Chocolateria had a good atmosphere, but the offerings were truly indulgent!

Mmm - chocolate good!

This review is for Gloria Jean's Coffees, Mt Hawthorn, Mount Hawthorn WA

I visited the Mt Hawthorn store recently with my mum and toddler in tow. It's all decked out the same as any other Gloria Jean's store - though it looked like they'd just been through a rush period as a few of the tables needed a wipe down. I easily located a high chair to park my munchkin into and placed my order at the counter with one of the two staff members. Straightforward transaction, the coffees were made in an efficient time frame (though I felt my coffee was a little cool), but all in all, a good "standard" Gloria Jean experience.

There's a few tables outside as a bonus on a sunny day - made even better by the fact that the whole outdoor area of The Mezz appears to be non-smoking. Nice!

This review is for Peter Cook Amcal Chemist, Tuart Hill WA

I have used this pharmacy for over 10 years, and have always found the pharmacists to be helpful, knowledgeable and more than happy to answer any questions I may have about any products they carry. They also have well-trained pharmacy assistants who never shy away from providing help (unlike some of the larger "supermarket" style pharmacies!).

In relation to price, they carry a good range of "Amcal" branded over-the-counter pharmaceuticals, as well as generic prescription drugs if you're watching your budget. You cannot put a price on their service though - friendly and efficient.

The Tuart Hill Lottery Centre is also conveniently located inside the pharmacy where you can purchase lotto, newspapers, magazines, cards (it's basically a small newsagent). This can be very handy when you want to steer clear of a visit to a shopping centre.

7 day a week trading (8am-10pm) - they have very accessible hours in which to visit them.

Parking can sometimes be a hassle, but there's parking behind the store if you miss out on a parking spot at the front.

A great pharmacy with caring staff and a good range of products!

This review is for The Treehouse Children's Clothing, North Beach WA

A delightful little store located on the outside of the North Beach Shopping Centre stocking designer baby and children's clothing, swimwear, shoes, toys, books and gifts.

I came across this shop when they were newly opened, and although the designer clothing is a little expensive for my budget, they also carry a fantastic range of well thought out products. I particularly liked their stainless steel drink containers and lunch-boxes, as well as their great range of hats (perfect for a store that's located next to the beach!).

The staff were pleasant and helpful and were very happy to answer all my queries in relation to their merchandise.

A lovingly created store stocked with a great range of baby and children's clothing and gifts in a nicely presented shop. There's even a small play area in the corner to keep the little ones amused whilst you browse the wares.

Love it!

This review is for Tempting Thymes Cafe, Inglewood WA

Located within Mt Lawley Wholefoods, this mainly vegan vegetarian cafe offers delicious meals both takeaway and dine-in (they also have a catering service). They serve coffees (milk for me, soy for my mum), chai lattes, cakes, and other sweet offerings too (and I'm pretty sure the usual fare of fresh fruit / vege juices are also available).

I should preface this review by mentioning I am definitely an omnivore, but the beautiful food in this cafe could almost turn me vego! It's a favourite when visiting Inglewood / Mt Lawley as it's conveniently located near the Inglewood Library. My mum and I love the coffee here, and we invariably end up having a meal whenever possible. Visually, the salads in particular look magnificent, but tastewise - they are absolutely scrumptious! I particularly like their salad that contains a mix of cranberries, cabbage, carrot and coconut. Their sweet potato and chick pea patties are also a favourite with my toddler.

The seating capacity is reasonably cosy (but comfortable), so we always try to pop in when it's a little quieter - and they have a high chair that I can use to keep my munchkin at the table, which makes our visits a bit more relaxing.

Price wise - the food is not "cheap" - but the quality of the ingredients and the care taken in making the food is obvious - and did I mention the taste (again - beautiful!!). The staff are always lovely and cheery at this cafe and we will continue to patron this establishment whenever we are in the neighbourhood.

Yummy!!!

This review is for Health Central Occupational Therapy International, Mount Hawthorn WA

verified email - 29 Aug 2011

A really talented and dedicated team of occupational therapists specialising in soft tissue treatment. The reception staff are also very friendly and helpful, and the centre caters for anything from the treatment of elite athletes, to workers, to everyday people (like me!).

Having used Chiropractic treatment for years, I was very reluctant to try anything new for my ongoing lower back issue. However, I took the plunge and have been very impressed with the therapy I've received at this centre. They were happy for me to "test out" more than one therapist (I haven't ever feel pressured to "stay" with the same therapist), though I have now settled with just one.

My therapist also assisted me throughout my pregnancy (I developed "pregnancy" carpal tunnel syndrome, and also had fluid retention in my ankles, as well as contending with my normal lower back issue). I found the therapy to be of enormous benefit during that period of time and I'm convinced that it assisted with keeping my joints mobile and my muscles "soft", to enable me to have a drug free, natural birthing experience (in conjunction with some antenatal pool classes and some chiropractic care).

I continue to still see my therapist today, as my active toddler means I'm always pushing the limits of my back, but I have managed to get to the point where I've now spaced my appointments out further as my therapy seems to be "holding" well (and the strongest pain relief I now use is the occasional paracetamol). I've also been given exercises to perform at home whenever some other issue has occurred (there's always something unexpected that seems to crop up with running around after children!).

Health Central also has some nifty electronic devices that you can use before/after your treatment with a therapist - I particularly love the "foot massager" unit for a bit of relaxation. Also, as they treat holistically, they naturally have various vitamins and mineral supplements for sale (at quite reasonable prices), though I've never felt pressured into "having" to buy them.

They have HICAPS, so claiming from my health fund is a hassle free transaction.

I cannot recommend Health Central Occupational Therapy highly enough!!!!
