The Venezia opened without much fanfare where "Gilbeys" used to be and as it is just a short walk from where we live we popped in on a week night and found it nice and busy. The owner/waitress is not Italian but assured us that her hubby is descended from a long line of Italian chefs and it certainly showed in the meals we received. The lady in charge [the owner] allowed me to choose where i wanted to sit and had an excellent sharp sense of humour. Always a good sign in my opinion. As it was a very warm evening my wife chose a chilled sauvigon blanc and this was promptly brought to our table.The cooler bucket however had the ice only at the bottom which is a pity but this can soon be remedied by adding water from the water bottle. I ordered the "Rigatoni Amitriciana" which is a favourite of mine of which i have indulged many in diverse restaurants. It is edifying to experience different chefs versions of a popular Italian dish.
My better half fancied the special veal dish which was served smothered in a creamy sauce and kept her in raptures for quite a few minutes. My entree portion was more than enough for me and though very different to other restaurants was better. Half way through we exchanged samples and next visit i will definitely choose the veal special if it is on. My wife loves deserts and i encourage her to have them as it allows me to taste them as well as maintaining the moral high ground by not over indulging.This night she chose the Venezia Tartuffo and when it arrived it not only looked impressive but it tasted even better and was sufficient to feed us both ! It turned out to be a speciality of the owners and could be a signature dish.
Well done to the owners of the Venezia truly amazing authentic italian food in Geilston Bay. We hope many more people take the short worthwhle drive out to this fine restaurant which also has plenty of parking.
