I dropped in here on my way from after a long trip on the train. I had heard a lot about so thought I would go and check it out myself. Honestly I didn't think much of it - it was too busy for my liking with a lot of noise from some kids and a homeless man sleeping on one of the chairs.

It has been said once here already, but I am going to say it again with qualification. Best. Coffee. in. Newcastle. By a long shot, too. I am a dedicated coffee drinker, and over the years I have come to the realization that, like all other culinary efforts, coffee is best when freshest. Any cafe that roasts its beans is going to kick any cafes arse that uses beans that have been in storage or in transit for a couple of nonths. Suspension roasts it's own beans. Chris trains each of his operators personally and they are all doing really well. I rate Chris' efforts up there with the Campos guys.

Are you a miserable grumpy old bastard like me who cringes when having to pay upwards of 3 or 4 dollars for espresso based coffee on the go when the results border somewhere between just drinkable to plain awful?
In fact, I typically get my fix at home by way of our humble little Rancillo Silvia machine paired with a good quality secondhand commercial grinder. To that end, I have been on the lookout for decent beans and though we have lived in Newcastle for over 7 months now, I only recently discovered Suspension. I can say without a doubt that their Kongi Gold blend is the best coffee I have ever put through our machines in the 5+ years I have been pulling espresso at home in Sydney *and* Melbourne.
Consistent delivery, flavour and beautiful crema to boot.
Additionally, the shop itself is the antithesis of your Starbucks, Gloria Jeans, and other 'insert most all of the other franchise chains' here. Mismatched/secondhand furniture, a nice sized courtyard, and a refreshing mix of mums with bubs, hipsters, suits, unemployables, dog lovers, and a staff that seems to know most of the regulars and pull consistently perfect macchiatos.
In summary, just one more reason to love Newcastle.

The best coffee in Newcastle.
Friendly people, simple delicious accompaniments to delicious fresh coffee.
Great atmosphere and really cheap compared with other, highly over rated espresso bars in the area.

Approximate cost: $3.00
