Most of the times I have been here, I have loved the food! The vegetarian green curry was absolutely delicious, and the veg fried rice was good enough that I sometimes wanted to order only that. The service has always been friendly and reasonably fast.

However, the last time I visited with my partner, we were both unhappy with the food- the green curry was very bland, and I was also disappointed with my fried rice! It was bad enough that we haven't been back in a while, despite going every moth or so before. Hopefully it was only a down night, and next time will be back to our standards.

When we arrived we were warmly greeted by a young waitress and as i had booked were shown swiftly to our table. My wife fancied the taste platter and we ordered this to share. At this stage we noticed that only one other table was occupied and this was by an extended family with 3 very well behaved children. We waited a while and before the platter arrived i ordered the sweet and sour pork and my better half the chicken green curry. The taste platter duly arrived and had one of each sample.Ie one tepid and tasteless so-called Thai fish cake ! One tepid so-called tasteless duck spring roll that was so bland it could have filled with blotting paper.and one tiny dried out tasteless scallop. The one dip was sweet sugar water and the other dip was unexceptional. Our main courses were also bland and my dish had minimal pork which was actually quite tasty but the pineapple pieces were tinned and the "sour" non-existent. Very bland and not really Thai at all. My wifes curry was equally bland and poor but the worst was the sald garnish which was undressed and so limp that i supect it was more than a day old.I DID bring the waitresses attention to the salad but had to explain and demonstrate how limp and tired the leafs were. After chatting to the waitress she explained that she was from China and the owners and the chef were all Malaysian. Maybe this is why it just wasnt Thai.

Approximate cost: $28 each

I've tried both the dine in and take-away options from these guys and have not been disappointed. Great flavours, fast, friendly service and not unreasonable in the pricing either.

Would definitely return again.

Royal Thai is owned by the same people who own Lime & Lemongrass in Bellerive. This is a more upmarket restaurant which I would classify as fine dining. The prices are fairly steep for Thai food, but the decor, atmosphere, service are food are all very nice.

I found the entres in particular to be fairly pricey. They serve the best green curry that I have had in Hobart. You have to pay extra for plain steamed rice as that is not included in the price of the mains.

They also do takeaway food.

Approximate cost: $20+
