I had the incredible good fortune to receive three years of training from elite shito-ryu practitioner Sensei Sandra Contreras. She is incredibly enthusiastic about this amazing art.You will be able to immediately benefit from Sensei's decades of international competition experience, having trained under some of the best Shito-ryu masters in the world.

I received the greatest in-class instruction imaginable due to her extensive knowledge of the subject and her attention to even the smallest aspects and dynamics of the art. The dojo is run quite professionally and is at a great location. I was amazed to see how Sensei was able to motivate each person to reach their full potential and improve individually as a karate practitioner throughout our training sessions. Deeply impressed, and I hope the sensei and the dojo continue to grow and reach new heights in the future too.

Okukan dojo is the best. Sensai Sandra is highly technical, giving, firm but also fun with the children. I am very impressed with her dojo and teaching style. I cannot recommend Sensai Sandra enough.

Sensei Sandra has a good understanding of how to be supportive of children’s development while instilling a sense of discipline. This dojo has seen my kid grow in physical and self confidence. The admin and membership process is easy and simple.

Highly, highly recommended as a dojo for young learners. My son has attended for 5 years. Sensei Sandra has a wonderful approach with the kids - firm and authoritative, but also kind and fun. The kids get rigorous physical training with a dash of philosophy on the side. Meg - who looks after the admin side - is infallibly organised, responsive and helpful.

Our son has been attending Okukan Karate since he was 4 and he’s now 8. We travel from South Yarra to Coburg since the karate school changed location but it’s well worth it. We tried 2 other karate schools closer to home but nothing compares with the professionalism and dedication offered in Sensai Sandra’s classes and overall teaching style. She instills discipline, manners and respect for each other and the craft of Karate and the students respond accordingly. Other schools we tried had no control and so learning was minimal.
Meg handles the administrative side and is also extremely professional and well organized.

Sensei Sandra is brilliant - kind and disciplined in her leadership as well as being extremely caring of her younger students and able to deliver a high quality program which has seen our son’s confidence and skills go from strength to strength. The coordinator, Meg is always approachable and willing to help with all aspects of the children’s attendance. A wonderful dojo.
