Going downhill

Been coming here for years, it was cheap and excellent food, But the last 18 months it has been going downhill. Prices are going up steeply and quality is down, the last 3 visits ended with two being very disappointing, tasteless food. That coupled with a pushy waiter who urged us to buy more and more, when we came in for a quick lunch. Unfortunately we are now looking for a new Italian restaurant.

It used to be very nice but now not much to choose from and took a long time to be served and sadly not as nice as usual . And yes we go every week so disappointed! A lovely waitress though !

Beautiful Italian food. Very filling pastas, great customer service. Doesn't take long for meals to come out. Cannot fault a thing.

There was a COCKROACH in our food and the chef (possibly owner) DID NOT APOLOGISE and said it was a common lettuce pest and ripped up our docket in front of the restaurant saying "after 10 years you have a go at me? I know what you're saying BUT I DON'T WANT TO HEAR ABOUT IT. Are you happy now?". Absolutely shocking. After being a long term customer they have shown they have BAD HYGIENE AND DO NOT CARE AT ALL ABOUT CUSTOMER SERVICE. We are directly reporting this to the NSW Food and Health Authority. Had the customer service had been better we would have left it at that. Be warned- DO NOT GO HERE.

Facts are Vital
A cockroach was NOT found.A tiny lettuce weevil (much smaller than a grain of rice ) was despite thorough salad washing. The customer wasn't happy with a waiter's & chef's apology and solution of the whole table of three dining on the house .
This restaurant has a 19 year unblemished record and reputation upheld by hard work.
It's a shame that an over reaction to something much smaller than a grain of rice can cause such a fuss.

Great value for money and for a quick feed you can't go past it. Uni students take note $10 and the pastas are very filling.

I WAS in the same frame of mind as the recent reviewers. I have had a couple of wonderful dining experiences over the years at The Northern Star with my friends, but when it comes to taking your children dining too, this is most definitely NOT the place to go!

The Manager is a nasty old man who seems to think that because he has a good reputation, he can pick and choose his Customers, sadly today was not my day.
Unfortunately for this Restuarant, he will now loose all of my business and all of my friends business. Customer Service is highly lacking here.
Such a shame, but there are plenty more great Cafes in the area for us to choose from!

As a vegetarian, I often have difficulty eating out as I also have other food allergies. They always make me something I can eat and enjoy tremendously. They make a spinach and ricotta cannelloni that melts in your mouth -absolutely delicious.

This is my absolute favourite restaurant. I am never disappointed with the quality, service or price when I eat at the Northern Star Cafe. Authentic Italian dishes for only $9.90... you just don't find that anywhere else. Their menu is hugely extensive, beyond strict Italian dishes, and everything is affordable. The staff are friendly and quick to serve you and you never have to wait long for your meal to arrive... even on a busy night. This place is very popular during dinner time and so you will need to make a booking if you don't want to be disappointed! If you live in Newcastle or are visiting for a short while, if you don't eat at this restaurant you are missing out! They are not open Sundays.

Approximate cost: $10-$25

It is now February 2011 and I need to comment on my earlier review as I no longer would recommend this place for dinner anymore. Because this was a favourite restaurant, we have eaten here regularly. We have noticed a severe decline in both food quality and taste during this time, and the restaurant never seems to be busy anymore, so perhaps others are seeing it too. I'm unsure if there's been a change of ingredients used, but their dishes do not taste the same, and on our most recent visit there last week, my husband's veal was very burnt, and half way through my boscaiola pasta I found a big disgusting mangey dead fly in there. Needless to say I was disgusted, and while they did not charge me for my meal, I have had enough and we will no longer eat at this restaurant anymore. I am too scared to see how an experience there could get worse so I won't risk it!

Wow if you love Italian you definitely have to try this place. Bookings are a must, especially at night. Everyone I know of who has eaten here loves the place. The food is exceptional and and is very reasonably priced. Great dining atmosphere.

Approximate cost: $10-20
