I went to this house with an open mind. My heart was acting weird when I entered there and I felt sick. I took heaps of pics but saw nothing. When I looked at the pics one had moved out of the sequence they were taken in and on closer inspection I saw an old lady in what appears to be a white nightie. Freaked me out. I wish I could put pic on here for all to see for yourselves.

A group of 11 of us stayed overnight and we had a blast. Bed and breakfast with a brilliant twist. The night started with a lovely home cooked meal followed by a ghost tour done with candle light. Some of us had a great night sleep, others felt less settled but all of us woke to a lovely hot breakfast and a day time exploration of the homestead. We all had a wonderful night and are glad we did it.

Approximate cost: $195 per person includes dinner, breakfast, tour and accomodation.

We owe the restoration of this historic gem of a property to the Ryan family who bought the virtual ruin in 1963 and with their children, have brought it back to the stately grandeur of the past era.

It is beautifully maintained, the grounds and garden as well, with many outbuildings of historical interest. There are also antiques and collectables which can be purchased and many items of interest in the gift shop.

Of course, Monte Cristo is famous for being "the most haunted house in Australia" and there is much documented evidence to this effect. It used to be a guided tour, but now as you enter through the gift shop (with their friendly cat) you buy a guide book for a small fee and can wander through the house yourself.

The furniture and decorations have been painstakingly collected and restored to give the sense of the lifestyle of previous owners of this house. Many stories of the families, staff and occurrences there can be purchased in a book or told by the attendant.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit which was quite long. And I can say that there was one room in which I felt much colder than any of the others - make of that what you will. Watch out for a wasps/bees nest to the left of the upstairs verandah. The coaches and hearses are a little scary for younger children in one of the stables. Bring a picnic and enjoy the gardens.

In September they hold an Annual Charity Ball, with guests in period costumes - the tradition began in 1973.

A really great place to visit and be impressed by the effort a few people put into maintaining a piece of Australian history.
