I visited this business for a pregnancy massage in my most recent pregnancy. The lady who runs the business and conducts the massages was friendly and nice, and did a good job with the massage. It was quite expensive compared to a standard massage (around $80) but worth it at the time as I was in quite a lot of pain and there are no other pregnancy massage places nearby that I could find online. The venue was a bit difficult to find as it's in a group of other shops/businesses but once you go through the door it's quite a nice place and easy to relax in. The only reason I haven't gone back was because I felt uncomfortable with some of the conversation that was had during the massage and didn't agree with some points that the masseuse raised about children with disabilities (eg that a parent can 'cause' autism by drinking coke and eating lots of chips). My sister didn't eat junk food during her pregnancy at all but still ended up with an autistic child which is very sad and so hearing these views made me quite uncomfortable. I didn't debate her points of view during the massage as I just wanted to relax and get some pain relief but afterwards I decided I would not return as I didn't want to hear more of this kind of conversation.

Approximate cost: $80

Dear Bellam1001

I am glad you enjoyed your massage at Earthly Birth. We pride ourselves on providing a high quality pregnancy or postnatal treatment for mums, from all over the state (and interstate sometimes too!).

I wanted to respond to your post, which I only recently found.

In relation to the pricing of our treatments, I believe what we charge reflects our HIGH LEVEL OF EXPERTISE AND SKILLS in this field. We are highly trained professional therapists, and personally I have over seven years experience treating pregnant/postnatal women, many qualificiation specialising in this field and a great personal interest in taking care of mums.

You can go elsewhere, pay less, and receive a sub-standard and sometimes dangerous massage treatment (as I experienced many times during my first pregnancy, and also my current pregnancy). In fact just two days ago I went somewhere new and the therapist asked me to lay in positions which, at 26weeks, are totally inappropriate.

I believe you get what you pay for most of the time, and I do also offer a 10% off discount for new client when they present a voucher (which you can find in lots of physio clinics/obstetrician's rooms etc across Adelaide).

I do not however recall making a statement that a "parent can cause Autism by drinking coke and eating lots of chips".

I do recall a discussion we had about a friend of mine who, during her pregnancy, used certain foods as "tests" to see how long it took for her baby to respons, eg high fat, high sugar foods.

We pondered on that, and discussed how what happens "in-utero" can possibly affect a child as it grows up. I believe this was a discussion we both took part in during the early part of your session, not me expressing an opinion.

I apologise if you have taken offence to the discussion we both took part in, or misinterpreted what was said.

I would NEVER suggest a parent, particularly the mother, could "cause" a disability. That would be highly unprofessional, and unethical, and inaccurate.

If you would like to discuss the matter further, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Kind Regards,
Rebecca Brook
