We had frequented the York hotel previously and decided to revisit so as to compare their $10 meals with other food outlets such as the Shamrock and the Sawak Cafe at island markets. The first thing to strike one is that the new bar is completely rebuilt and the old pool room has undergone a tasteful refurb and looks like a dining room. Personally we would have gone with fewer candelabras but then we are merely punters. The Boags draught 10oz. were $4 each and were freezing cold as they should be. As i was carrying our lagers through to the restaurant area i was approached by afriendly young waitress who told me we could sit anywhere as they were not too busy. In fact by the time my wife and i had ordered we were the only patrons in the restaurant area but a little later another couple appeared and also ordered food. Because we were all alone i requested that the chef crisp up our chips some more as this is how we really like them. We had both ordered the Scallops;chips and salads and within a few minutes the meals were brought to us on a plate which also held a small ramikin of a sauce resembling tartare sauce. At this juncture the other two patrons had yet to arrive which makes it more remarkable that instead of our chips being extra crispy the very young looking chef had done some extra crisping to our battered scallops which made them resemble toasted marbles. Surely by now even a young and possibly inexperienced chef must know how to cook scallops !!?? The sauce was thin and runny and devoid of taste but the worst was yet to come. In Hobart especially it is unforgiveable to serve an old limp and slithery salad. To receive this poor standard of food on an obviously first visit is incredibly cavalier and reckless to boot. It is of no use at all in claiming that they serve delicious meals when they are clearly not and pouring money down the drain on decor while neglecting the food quality. Take a visit to your opposition and then have a word with the chef. We certainly wont be back.

Approximate cost: $10 per meal
