Were pleased to find a vet on a public holiday when help was scarce and our animal a typical. One of the ducks on our property had really been through some trauma. We saw her narrowly avoid an attack by an eagle from a neighbouring paddock where she wandered with another Muscovy duck of ours. One duck ran back as they can't fly with some cuts but ok. The one we feared taken turned up that evening looking a mess but with no bleeding and standing. Given the frequency of Wedge Tail Eagle sightings we constructed a pen and run to keep the ducks from roaming and they spent the next day there. The two who met with the eagles were quiet and passive. All wasn't over; our inquisitive pony trampled into the pen twice likely looking for food and trouble and making a mess of the fencing. The ducks used to roaming and now cooped were likely uncomfortable, so much so we found one pecking the leg of the duck who had gone missing until it bled profusely, collected up the duck immediately and saw it could not use the leg anymore.
We found BVECC, the only vets available anywhere in the vicinity, dropped our farm maintenance and drove the duck there.
The vets helped though it's unlikely many people turn up there with a duck. They advised as best they could and we appreciate their concern over the animal and attention to the odd course of events which led us to be there in their waiting room. We'll follow a course of antibiotics and see if can help the duck. We don't know exactly how it became so hurt given the sequence of events but hope it can recover.
