This review is for Cut Fresh Bentleigh, Bentleigh VIC

A traditional butcher with a large range of fresh cuts of meat (beef, veal, chicken, pork and lamb) as well as some marinated/pre-prepared options. The quality of the meat that we've purchased from here in the past has always been very good. The meat is very fresh and of a very high quality. The only thing I wouldn't recommend are the BBQ sausages which were pretty average. We would shop here more often but for the fact that the prices are higher than other butchers in our area.

This review is for Imperial Crest Hair Company, Brighton VIC

I needed to get a blow-wave for a special event that I was going to on a Sunday night and it's extremely difficult to find a decent hairdresser that is open for trade on Sundays. Imperial Crest was recommended to me by another hairdresser so I called up and booked in with them straight away.

I was absolutely delighted by the fabulous customer service I received from the staff at Imperial Crest. From the moment I walked in, I was greeted, seated and offered tea or coffee. The young girl who washed my hair was lovely, really friendly and chatty. The lady who then styled by hair was also incredibly friendly and chatty. She listened to exactly what I wanted, acknowledged my concerns and gave me the finish that I wanted. The service was prompt and, on the whole, the service was excellent value for money. I wouldn't hesitate to use their service again!

The store is in a very easy to access location on Church Street. The only problem you'll have is finding parking, as Brighton is a nightmare when it comes to street parking during the weekend.

I've been looking for a car mount for my Blackberry but have been reluctant to buy something that is model-specific because that limits its use over the long term. I found Camzilla online and sent an enquiry through asking if they had something suitable. I received a very prompt response (within the hour) and Barry suggested I try the universal iPhone/Android suction mount as it is able to be used with my model Blackberry as well.

I purchased the mount through their website on Wednesday (a public holiday), it was shipped immediately the next business day and arrived on Friday morning. I've just installed the mount in my car and it is INCREDIBLE. It is extremely sturdy and the suction is tremendous! I have no fear that my phone will ever be anything less and safe and secure while I'm driving. The great thing is that I should be able to use it with the next model phone I buy, and the next, and the next!

My overall experience with Camzilla has been brilliant. I am a Media Production student and I will highly recommend Camzilla and their products to my fellow students and colleagues in the industry!

This review is for Ice Cream A'la Copenhagen, Dromana VIC

verified email - 25 Apr 2012

This review will be short because there isn't a lot to say about this business. This ice cream shop is a little bit down-market and seems to be trying to rip off the Royal Copenhagen franchise. There are a lot of flavours to choose from but we found that the flavours we chose (New York chocolate, lemon sorbet, Violet Crumble) were flavourless! It felt like a waste of eating ice cream. We were sorely disappointed.

This review is for Digger's Club, Dromana VIC

My husband and I wanted to get some heirloom seeds for planting in our garden after our (very healthy and prosperous) summer tomato crop left us with good looking but completely bland and tasteless tomatoes. While you can certainly order the seeds online, my husband thought it would be fun to make a day trip to the Mornington Peninsula and go to The Diggers Club nursery at Heronswood Gardens.

The nursery certainly has a very large offering of plants and seedlings. They also have a few interesting varieties of garlic for planting and a huge complement of seeds (mostly heirloom, some hybrid) as well. We bought some garlic and several packets of seed, as well as some peat pots (which were quite cheap at $3.60 for 30 small pots).

The service wasn't as good as I would have expected from staff who work for a gardening club. We asked what I thought were some pretty basic questions (we're not exactly beginners but we are still learning) and the answers we received seemed a little confused and not very clear. The experience certainly didn't inspire us to spend $50 to join the Club.

I will note that they were kind enough to give us permission to bring our small dog into the nursery (leashed) as the day went from cool to quite hot and we really didn't want to leave him tied up in the sun.

I can't speak for the quality of the seeds yet, but I'll certainly provide an update once we've got something to taste-test!

This review is for Cafe JETT, Dromana VIC

verified email - 25 Apr 2012

We made a day trip down to the Mornington Peninsula last weekend and popped into Cafe Jett in Dromama for some lunch while we were there. It was a beautiful day and we sat on one of the tables out front because we had our dog with us.

I ordered the salt and pepper calamari and my husband had a BLT. I really enjoyed the calamari; they were cooked well, not chewy at all, and they were lightly seasoned with a lovely flavour. My husband's BLT came out as an "open" sandwich but, while he thought it was OK overall, there was definitely WAY too much mayonnaise on it. The chips were crisp and fresh (although they could have done with a bit more seasoning). Prices were a little on the high side (around $20 per main) but perhaps that's the average for a seaside tourist village during the off season.

The service was good to begin with but as the afternoon wore on it slowed down quite a bit. There were only a handful of people actually in the cafe so perhaps the slowness could be attributed to the fact that we were out front and maybe not so easy to see.

The cafe in general does seem a little "confused" - the business is a cafe combined with a clothing shop, deli, bar and office service. As it is based in a small tourist town on the Mornington Peninsula, it may make good business sense for them to offer such a varying number of services. I would say that more focus on the cafe/bar part of the business and less on the sundry could make it a really great place to dine. My overall opinion is that it is nice but could do better.

I had a late breakfast here with my sister-in-law. All in all, it was pretty average. The waitress was a little slow and didn't seem very interested in being at work. I tried the corn fritters, which are topped with smashed avocado, smoked salmon and poached eggs. I thought it was nice but there was nothing outstanding about the flavour or the ingredients. My sister-in-law had the eggs benedict, but she didn't mention whether she loved it or not. Beverages were okay, the coffee was nothing outstanding. The prices were about par with cafe breakfasts in the area; again, about average. It wasn't very busy so we were able to hang around for a while and chat without feeling pressured to leave, so that was a plus. They don't split bills, so if you're dining with friends keep that in mind.

This review is for Wishbones Charcoal Chicken, Hampton East VIC

Delicious charcoal chicken and chips!!! The owner and his staff are really friendly and always make us feel welcome. The prices are reasonable and they even give us free size upgrades on their sides from time to time. Make sure you get there early because they close the shop once they sell out (usually by around 8pm but sometimes earlier depending on how busy they are) so you could miss out if you get there too late!

This review is for Sunnybrook Health Store & Healing Centre, Ormond VIC

verified email - 17 Apr 2012

My husband and I found the website for Sunnybrook Health Store when we were searching online for local suppliers of Passionflower Tea (which is said to have natural properties that can help people experiencing insomnia). We don't live far from the store so we decided to go straight in and buy some.

The store has a huge range of different health food products (not just tea, although the range of teas is pretty comprehensive as well!) We ended up spending an hour in the store just browsing through all of the different products on sale.

While our main objective was to get the tea (which we did) we would definitely come back again to get any specialty organic or health products that we might need in the future.

This review is for Mecca Cosmetica, Melbourne VIC

I was looking for somewhere to get my makeup done for an event at the last minute. I originally tried the Mecca Cosmetica store in Brighton but they were booked out. They suggested I try the store on Little Collins Street - luckily they had some availability and booked me in!

Alex was my makeup artist and she did a gorgeous job. She was very consultative and was always making sure that I was happy with everything she was doing. She made great suggestions about colours and products used and I was really happy with the final result.

If you need to get your makeup done on a Sunday and you don't mind going into the city, then definitely try this store as they often have availability on a Sunday.

Another fabulous Mecca Cosmetica experience - thanks Team, I love your work!

Approximate cost: $90 (redeemable for product!)
