Unpretentious and delicious. Written on Tea serves authentic Chinese food in generous servings for very reasonable prices. Expect very casual service. Go for the dumplings, xiao long bao, and dry-fried french beans.

I know we're only a week into the year, but I'm pretty sure I've found a genuine contender for the worst meal I will eat out in 2013.

My wife and I dined here last night, and to be blunt, it was woeful.

I ordered the hand-shredded chicken with peanuts from the specials menu, and my wife ordered the bento teriyaki chicken.

My wife's meal was delivered quickly to the table, but it was all but slapped down in front of her in a plastic tray that would not have been out of place in a food court. She said the food was OK, but the chicken was a bit gristly.

When my plate was delivered, it actually looked quite tasty. Looked. When I sampled it, I quickly discovered that it was massively overloaded with salt. It was like the work experience kid knocked over the salt in the kitchen and didn't tell the boss. It was inedible.

The service? Well this is difficult to rate because there pretty much was none. Even paying the bill we were not asked how our meal was.

The value? Well it was cheap, but still pretty poor value if you can't eat what you actually get served up.

I would not recommend this place at all. There are plenty of other places to eat in Sandy Bay. I'd suggest trying those instead.

This is the place to go if you want a good filling meal at a good price. Neither me or my partner could finish our lovely food, and it was the price of entrees at some restaurants. Will definitely go there again.

Approximate cost: $14

Amazing dumplings and main courses. Traditional chinese food (not generic australianised chinese food), in a great atmosphere. I eat here weekly.

Approximate cost: $14

Amazing Chinese restaurant, food is unbelievably good and cheap! Went with a group of about 12, we shared quite a few dishes around the table and had several serves of dumplings as entrees - the entire bill averaged out to only $14 person!
The dry fried french beans with minced pork were delicious, as was the salt & pepper calamari and the stir fried sliced potatoes.
The vermicelli with minced pork and the pork dumplings with cabbage also stand out.
There is a fairly cheapish looking front room with tables, and then downstairs a more luxurious dining room, so you can drop in for a quick and easy meal, or have a more up-market meal.
They also do take aways.
This is an unmissable place that you must try.

Approximate cost: $13
