About 8 of us came here midweek for an end of year work "team building event"- ok it was lunch and a drink but don't tell the big bosses! I've been here before, for beers and tapas which was pretty decent but that years ago.

We were promptly seated, handed our menus and drink orders taken. None of us were game enough to drink actual real life booze in front of our boss so we settled on soft drinks and began to peruse the menu.

The menu is a confusing hodge podge of this and that and had no real clarity on what the specialised in so everyone ordered the standard fare of caeser salads, burgers and beer battered chips (the chips were delicious by the way). Before I was about to order I asked what the specials were and he rattled something off, all I remember hearing was baked, seafood and safron rice and I immediately jumped on that, with visions of a paella or something similar.

The meals came out one at a time and we were advised ours would be a little longer, which I sort of expected, given it needed to be baked in the oven. So I was stuck there, stomach growling, watching everyone else stuff their face.

My meal eventually came out a good 25minutes after everyone elses and I was hoping food to match the wait. The dish came out piping hot and well presented but unfortunately that was the end of the positives, it was otherwise bland and tasteless. I feel strongly against against paying $35+ for a dish when the rice wasn't even cooked properly. But everyone elses seemed to look pretty tasty.

Generally this place is a bit overpriced for what it is but I might come back and try something different.

One of my favourite places to spend a few hours kicking back and socialising with friends. Love the beers brewed on site and the staff are very knowledgeable about them which is great. The tapas menu is always the way I want to eat and if each person gets 2 tapas there is heaps to share ! Great place to people watch on the main street and in the warmth of a summers evening beautiful to sit outside if you can get a table.

Approximate cost: $17

Good place for a drink and nibble in the winter sunshine. Good little menu that compliments the drinks. Lots of beer made on site. Staff are the type of people you expect to see in Freo. Fun friendly and hepful. Drinks and food reasonably priced for Freo. Indoor and outdoor seating availble. Lovely wooden sleepers, used to made dividing walls and tables. Great atmosphere. A good place to take a visitor to Perth.

Approximate cost: $25.00

Excepional service at the Mad Monk. We had lunch here recently and my son spikt his drink everywhere and within seconds and without having to ask our waitor bought over a new drink (no extra charge) and cleaned up the mess. It was really nice not having to feel embarrassed about it or made to feel bad. Our son was given crayons and paper to draw on which was also nice as we xould enjoy our meal whilst he was entertained . Food was very good, I can recommend any of the pizzas and fish and chips . Beer great also! Definitely will be going back next time we are in Freo.

I have been here with my husband a few times, we often frequent Fremantle on the weekends for pub meals and to check out the markets. We normally just get a few of the smaller entre sized meals between us a bit like a tapas meal as we find it filling enough with the beer. We have tried most of the entres and none have let us down yet, my favourtire is probably the chorizio and hubby's the salt & pepper squid. This is also one of the few places I see that actually make a meal including Quinoa!!! I haven't tried their quinoa salad yet but it's on my list. My husband swears by the beer here and I think this is normally the main reason for our visit, he's happy to sit back and enjoy 3/4 no problems. We always get a seat outside because it's a nice place to sit and people watch, can be pretty difficult to secure an outside spot on weekends

Approximate cost: $15

The best place for beer lovers. full stop. If you don't know the Monk you definitely must go there.

For beer and food matching, the monk is unbeatable - they really know what beers go with what foods. It is very expensive but if you keep with the daily specials it's no more than you'd pay at a normal restaurant.
