i had dinner here with 3 sashimi-loving friends upon their high recommendation, so i knew i was in for a treat ;) thank DaddyGod, we didn't have to line up outside to get a table, busy as they were :) we ordered their sashimi salad, fried agedashi tofu, edamame beans, teriyaki chicken, sushi+sashimi combination plate & sushi dinner set, complete with 1 miso soup, 1 tea, & 4 green tea ice creams, and the total bill between 4 of us was $71. pretty good i reckon for a quality, healthy Japanese meal! the servings were generous, the atmosphere vibrant, service typically friendly & cheerful as you'd expect from Japanese places :) it's pretty small inside so i see how it could easily be packed full when they're busy. because we ordered so much food, we had to eat fairly quickly to make room for the next plates of beautifully resented, flavorsome food :) I look forward to coming back here another time! - if you love Japanese food, you gotta try sushi suma! ... their lunch menu looks slightly cheaper, so i'll definitely hafta try here again at lunch time!

Have been going to sushi suma regularly for nearly a decade now. Always great food. Recommend the Kaiso Salad and the Set Menus. Way too much food and you never know whether they will bring the whole catastrophe. This is by no means a 'fancy' Japanese restuarant - but if you're looking for a reasonably priced, consistently good Japanese with generous servings this place is for you. It's BYO too. The service wouldn't be described as friendly - but it's very functional and quick. A good, neighbourhood choice.

We frequently return to this Surry Hills gem! Food is fresh, quick, and what value for money. We love good japanese food but often find that it can be very pricey. Don't expect anything about the ambience or service. This place feels more like a campus cafe. BUT they do serve nice quality sushi (considering the price you pay) and pretty generous servings. When you crave for sushi, Japanese food but you don't want to spend too much, this is the place for you.

Sushi Suma is one of my favorite Japanes casual dining restaurant. We go here often for dinner. There is sometimes a queue if you go during peak hours. The place can be abit noisy and seating is quite squashed, but it is cosy. We love ordering the Sushi Sashimi set which costs around $33, and it is just right for 2 people. The set comprises of entrée (sushi or sashimi pieces, there is enough for 2 people) and the sashimi is always fresh, chicken teriyaki sticks, agedashi tofu, miso soup, green tea, also a main of either beef, chicken or fish, and finishing off with green tea ice-cream with red beans and flakes. Very yummy and the portion size is very generous and huge too. Good value for money. We sometimes order the famous salad which is huge (only $8.60)! The food arrives quickly as well! My husband and I are very full just ordering 1 set between the 2 of us and the place is BYO too and charged by per glass. The waitstaff are very busy but are friendly. Highly recommended place for casual Japanese dining!

One of our favourate Japanese restaurant. The food is very nice and the price of the set menu is reasonable. The size of their seaweed salad is huge. The only problem is service. The owner never smiles, we have been there for many years and yes we never saw him smile! Recently, we have not see him there and I guess that is a good thing for the business. :)

Is it the red-hair guy who takes orders?

Sushi Suma has been a favourite of mine for years - fantastic food, atmosphere and prices. They are always busy but if you can't get a table straight away they'll seat you upstairs, get you a drink, take your order and get you seated downstairs as soon as a table becomes available.

Great sushi. The service is a bit sloppy though and the atmosphere isn't that great. But its alot cheaper and probably fresher than other sushi restaurants so you can't really complain.

Quite possibly the best Japanese food in Sydney. Yes, service is appalling but you're not in a 5-star restaurant so get over it. Even the sashimi in Japan does not compare!

They service you stock standard "typical" Japanese food like sashimi, tempura, yakitori and green tea ice cream. It is a casual restaurant and they offer set meals at very reasonable prices. I would not recommend it if you are wanting more seasonal, delicate Japanese food.
