I love coming here for a date night with my partner. It's much more classy than the standard cinemas - you can have wine in a real glass, the seats are plush and the cinemas are small and intimate. They also have a cool cinema that has glass walls and a rooftop cinema for summer nights.

A great place to see a movie - especially if you get one of the downstairs cinemas that are small and intimate, with lounge chairs! Also, the cafe is great for coffee and cake with friends or alone - the chocolate gluten free cake is amazing!

I've been going here since I was a child, back when there was just the one cinema. The transformation has been incredible. It's definitely my preferred cinema! Amazing building, great staff, good bar options. I don't really love the food, as it seems like they just reheat things made elsewhere, but it's not somewhere that I go to eat anyway.

I love coming here :) the seats are comfy, the staff are professional and friendly, and there aren't the masses of hogans and kids, like at village cinemas.
Nice to take your wine/coffee/food from the cafe in and enjoy a movie.

This theatre is a bit more "old school" than the other popular cinema's. The seats are verrrry comfy and you can take your food and drinks in the theatre with you - and I mean alcoholic drinks, yay! Haha. Nice to enjoy a wine.

The place is very neat and lovely looking, a nice place to dress up a little if you want :)

This is a lovely place to sit in North Hobart for a quiet catch up with friends. There is a good selection of generous cakes. Its light, spacious and pleasant.

Whilst I love and applaud the actual cinema and the gorgeous bookshop and really value the service this wonderful place offers I really think the café is not up to scratch at all! I have been for pre and post movie drinks, coffee and food during the day and at night and no matter how busy or slow they are the service is deadly, the coffee is awful and the food dry and unappetising which, given the great opportunity they have created is a real shame! Lift your game guys and take some pride! 20 mins. for lousy coffee/tea/chai is just not good enough and can you do something about those awful dry desserts you offer? In every other respect though....The State rocks!

What an amazing place this is and such an asset for Hobart. The cafe, book shop and cinema all combine to make it a great experience...my only complaint is that the cheap price Tuesday should run through January too.

I agree with the price aspect. Why are we not rewarded for our custom all year around?

I will never go to a large chain cinema again after finding the State Cinema. Housed in a beautiful heritage building with some new additions there is a beautiful ambience on entering the front doors. Prices are very reasonable but what I loved the most was the intimacy of the small cinemas which I'm guessing would hold around 100 people each. Although they have never been more than about 20% full on the occasions I have attended! The other attraction here is the large cafe which serves snacks and light meals at reasonable prices. I also love foreign films which are shown here on a regular basis although mainstream films are also shown. A lovely place for a date!

The State has expanded the cafe area out the back, incorporating the old building with a new extension. On Friday nights there is a musician playing (guitar), and it is a lovely place to meet friends and chat, whether or not you are going to a movie. Good hot chocolate, very tempting cakes!
The State now has a bookshop which is open late on Fridays (in the space where Restaurant 373 used to be) - worth a look for more unusual titles you won't see at other bookshops.
The expansion of the State over the past few years has been amazing! If you haven't been for a while, go and check it out.
