The food at Shiki is sensational. Favourite dishes include salmon sashimi, okonomiyaki, and seafood teppanyaki. My four year old loves the yakitori.
The waitstaff seem really inexperienced but they are so friendly that all is forgiven when they mess up orders because they are apologetic and quick to fix.
This is a family friendly restaurant.

Four of us attended for dinner on a Monday night. We all had hot mains and were generally unimpressed. Mine lacked flavour and was quite bland. Service was very average and rude.

Approximate cost: $20

The food here is really good. The flavours are fresh and authentic. The menu is extensive and they cater reasonably well for vegetarians. The bento boxes are excellent value. It can be a little cool, so take a jumper. The speed of service varies depending on the night.

Approximate cost: $16-18

Japanese dining in the suburbs is usually a pretty homogenous experience - very few suburban restaurants set themselves apart from the rest. Shiki Restaurant is one that does. Although the service (on a good night) is average, the food is sensational. The sushi and sashimi are always fresh and beautifully presented, and with varieties such as octopus, unagi and scallop sushis, they step well outside the mainstream expectations. Their hot dishes are always superb too (I have had the fried chicken numerous times!), and although the prices are not "cheap", they are definitely much less than you would expect to pay for this quality of food. The atmosphere is very pleasant also, and we have been here numerous times to celebrate significant occasions (birthday and anniversary). Super restaurant.

Slightly overpriced for the small portions but very tasty. They have a large selection of unusual drinks which are fun to try. The restaurant is very quiet and you often get a waiter or waitress soley attending to your needs.

Wonderful place to go for Japanese food, they have a great banquet where you can try many of the more popular dishes. Always consistent!!

Slightly overpriced and service is not quite up too scratch. In comparison to other Melbourne Japanese restaurants it is a bit lacking in quality of food. Would still eat there because of convenience of location but was not that impressed.
