The Ross Island Hotel is very much and old school type of bar that caters to the stereotypical working class man in the Railway Estate/South Townsville areas. The Ross Island Hotel offers your normal par for course pub meals with my particular favourite being their chips with gravy. The meals are good sized servings and the prices are on the lower side of average. The public bar is a very robust place where you are probably likely to hear the odd piece of colourful language but also meet some great characters. The bar really comes alive when the V8s are racing as it is only a stone's throw from pit lane. Most afternoons I can come in and find some sort of entertainment going on whether there be raffles, trivia, karaoke or some sort of other pub promotional activity. Ross Island is definitely the bar of choice for the V8s weekend.
