I really liked Northern Light. It is one of only a few other similar venues in Melbourne which cater to a forgotten space in the market. We have a lot of bistro eateries/bars serving high quality small dishes/tapas - french, spanish, modern australian, japanese, thai. This is the market that Northern Lights seems to be playing in.
Rather sticking with one strict cuisine however, they take inspiration from the asian countries generally. Using characteristic ingredients, cooking techniques they then build dishes using new twists and to create something completely new and interesting.
We enjoyed items such as the following
Oysters with rice wine
Shitake skewer with ponzu & sesame mayo
Edamame, bean curd, chili, gai lan (kind of vegetable composee)
Scampi with floss, & kewpie
Congee, spiced eggplant, dashi, garlic emulsion
Chili crab, XO onions, celery, coriander
Berries, umeboshi, rice pudding, sable
It was a really fun and enjoyable experience. Good for casual cum special occasions where you want a shared experience over food.
