One of the best Shanghai cuisine restaurants in the area. Food is always of high quality and is consistent every time I have eaten there. Highly recommend the drunken chicken dish and the dumplings with peanut butter sauce. Service is always efficient and food comes quickly! The decor in the Chatswood chase location is excellent! The Lemon grove location is not the same ambiance but this does not take away from the experience or how great the food is!

Restaurants reputedly based on Shanghainese cuisine are exceeding popular in Sydney. New Shanghai is just one of the chains offering modern Shanghai cuisine (the other two are Din Tai Fung, my review here and Taste of Shanghai). New Shanghai spans 5 locations in Sydney (two in Chatswood alone, Ashfield, Bondi Junction and Charleston), one each in Brisbane and Melbourne and has even made it into Shanghai. There is much to love about New Shanghai. Their funky street scenes interior in their signature bright red colour recreates the hustle and bustle of vintage Shanghai streets. Think screens, pictures of retro Shanghainese ladies in cheongsams and old bicycles. The xiao long baos preparation is done behind glass walls (like that of Din Tai Fung) so you can chose to sit at the counter in front of the chefs and watch their deft dumpling making skills.

The service is just about the fastest I’ve experienced. On this Sunday, five of us arrived at 7:30pm, 15 minutes before the kitchen closed. We were quickly seated and given 3 minutes to select our orders, with the wait staff hovering over us. To our amazement, all 7 dishes were delivered within the allocated time. The menus are used as tablemats, and the extensive menu span cold dishes, dim sum selection, soups, vegetables, noodles and rice and larger protein dishes. The selections are tweaked regularly and there are also specials on offer.

We started off with cold shredded jellyfish and radish tossed with sea salt and light soy dressing ($7.80). I grew up eating jellyfish at the dinner table, and this was more for nostalgic reasons than taste. Jellyfish is eaten primarily for its texture, and this slightly savoury, crunchy and chewy entrée is a good way to whet your appetite. The two must-do are the Shanghainese xiao long baos ($7.80 for 8 pieces) and Shanghai pan-fried pork bun ($10.50 for 8 pieces). Both of these have soup in them and arriving piping hot, it’s always a struggle to wait for them to cool down sufficiently before biting into the dough to release the fragrant soup. I enjoyed the stir-fried clams with ginger and shallots ($15.80), perfectly cooked and redolent with spicy ginger gravy.

BL always orders the stir-fired prawn coated with salted egg yolk ($24.80). The salted duck egg yolk coating gives it a very rich taste, nice to have as the occasional treat. The pork belly braised overnight in sweet soy sauce ($17.50) is served in an earthenware pot was beautifully tender. To balance out all the protein, we had garlic stir-fried seasonal vegetables, which on the day was choy sum ($11.50).

New Shanghai is an easy choice for a delicious quick meal, in pleasant surroundings. The 3-hour free parking at Chatswood Chase is a great bonus. ...

New Shanghai is the epitomy of perfect dumpling cuisine. This is our go to place when we dont know what we want. The dumplings are made fresh right in front of you and the prices are very reasonable. They pride themselves in hygiene and they seem to have strong regulations in place for this. Our favourite dishes are Rainbow Beef, Steamed Pork served with shredded cucumber and buns and the steamed greens. Wait time to get in the restaurant can be a little high if it is peak time however when inside meals are always served efficiently.

Approximate cost: $20

I regularly enjoy their steamed mini pork buns. You can watch them being made - very hygienic conditions and interesting to see how fast the pork bun makers are! You get 8 for $7, which I think is great value. Personally, I like to have a bit of the vinegar with them and find this enhances the flavour. You do have to be careful when you pierce them, though, as the liquid/soup inside is super-hot and you could burn your mouth. There is nearly always a queue (which is a good sign), so put your name down on the waiting list (the seat turnovers are usually fairly quick). If the wait is slightly longer, you can always go and do your grocery shopping in Chatswood Chase (there's a Coles store nearby). Parking is convenient - 3 hours' free in the Chase. Highly recommended for the best pork buns in Sydney (in my opinion).

Busy place. The decor is great (eg Chinese lanterns etc). Makes you feel like your in a busy place downtown in the Shanghai province. Typical expected cuisine. Recommend the dumplings and pan fried pork bun.

the services is alright and the food is not so bad either. The dumplings are not the best in sydney, their charges is reasonable since it is inside the chatswood shopping mall

I've been here a couple of times and like the dumplings. The food is reasonably priced and service fairly quick.

Sounds like the dumplings are a must try if you come here.

Hungry one evening in Chatswood, Boyfriend takes me to this restaurant. We can see the cooks making dumplings through the front window that leads out to the food court of the Lemon Grove Arcade off Victoria Mall in Chatswood. Restaurant looks a bit dingy, but Boyfriend assures me that the food is spectacular. We are quickly seated and are overwhelmed by the pictorial menu, everything looks delicious, but we cannot eat it all! We decide to share a Hot & Sour Soup and some chilled sticky Spare Ribs for Entree, and for main we get pan fried pork dumplings and steamed dim sims to share. The food was realy nice, but we couldn't eat it all. Including drinks our bill came to under $30 for the two of us. Staff were friendly and put our food into a takeaway container to enjoy later, which we did!

This place attracted our attention and the service was quick but not personal.
The food however was amazing. Maybe the chilli has been toned down but the price per meal is very affordable.

Approximate cost: $12
