I was a bit skeptical about whether a TENS machine would work but I am so glad I used it. I hired one from Labour TENS and everything was arranged online. A few weeks before I was due, the package was delivered complete with very simple instructions, spare batteries and a return express postage bag - so after the birth I didn't have to run around figuring out how to return it.

When I went into labour the initial contractions weren't too bad and I wasn't even completely sure I was in labour. After about 3 or 4 hours, they were getting more and more intense so I though I'd give the TENS machine a go. Initially it felt really wierd to be wired into something which is sending electrical pulses through your body but I soon got used to it. Its completely portable so you strap the controller to your arm like an ipod and can move around easily. I was trying to distract myself and stay upright so even though it was the middle of the night, I started doing some cooking - whenever I got a contraction I just pressed the boost button and leaned over the bench. It didn't remove the pain totally, but it did bring it down a few notches. At one point I wondered whether it was working that much so I didn't use it for a contraction - and I sure noticed the difference!

In the end, I only went to hospital once my waters broke (about 9 hours after my first contraction) and I gave birth less than 3 hours after that. I used the TENS machine the whole time - even in the pushing stage - and I didn't use any other pain relief. (There was a point when I asked for an epidural but by then the midwife said I was really close so no point in having it).

I'd definitely recommend other people use the TENS machine. It's not magic but it might reduce the amount of pain relief you need, or at least delay it. And it definitely makes labour a little more comfortable - its good having something you can control too!
