This is my favourite Japanese restaurant, and one of my favourite restaurants altogether in the Newcastle area. I always order the same thing, thinly sliced vegetables in a light tempura batter which comes with a sweet soy dipping sauce. Last time I was there I ordered this again, and as always it was lovely and tasted really light and fresh and crunchy. The serving size was more generous for this same dish as other Japanese restaurants which I have been too. Kitami's also includes a little bowl of rice and a little bowl of miso soup as a side dish with many of the mains, so this also helped fill me up, which was good. The décor is really authentic here and the service is consistently good. Another dish which is really tasty and which my husband recommends is the thinly sliced very rare beef with a BBQ style dipping sauce, and the sushi.
A fantastic restaurant for Japanese food. Definitely a favourite in Newcastle. The sushi was fresh and tasted fantastic. The service was speedy and the waiter was extremely helpful.
We went to the restaurant on 5 Mar 2011, we ordered their banquet for two. It was $33 per person. The food was average compare to other Japanese restaurants' banquet food, and the quantity and quality were just disappointing. It quantity was only good for one person and very plain, the sushi on the plate didn't fresh enough to be call the Japanese food. The kitchen looks dirty and disordered. I just want to let all customers know the menu is totally misleading, you think you would get all fabulous food from the menu, but all you can get only one item for each person, so it's definitely not worth what you paid for. I had Japanese banquet other places, what Kitami provides to their customers is absolutely rip off and misleading. So before you go, think about it!
The best japanese food in newcastle. The staff are great and their tepanyaki bars and japanese rooms are great for a function. Only thing is it could do with a bit of a spruce up, the decor is getting a little old.
