I often stop in at Kate's place for coffee, and it is always very good. I decided to try it out for lunch the other day, and although the crumbed chicken panini was tasty, it was quite a small serve for $10, and it was a little light on chicken for my liking. One quarter of the panini had no chicken at all. They have a great range of cakes, and some specials on offer as well. It is a really nice, welcoming type place to sit for a coffee though, with retro style decor. The other thing I like is that they offer a coffee texting service for uni students, text through your coffee order and they will have it ready for you in 5 minutes! After my lunch, I also realised that they have a student special of a panini and coffee for $11, which would have been much better value. They also have a loyalty card, half price coffee for your fifth coffee, and free for your 10th, which is good.

Approximate cost: $12

I've been here twice for lunch since it opened around October last year. It has a carefree, Euro, hippy atmosphere, probably because it is next door to the backpackers and most of the staff I have seen are foreign. The lunch menu is surprisingly sparse for a cafe that is open from early morning right to 6pm, BUT is very unique and the meals I've had were delicious and well presented. They are also cheap (under $15) compared to other Albany cafes. In general the food side of Kates Place is very pleasing, but the lack of common recognisable meals like fish n chips might not suit every taste. The service was pleasant and very polite.

Approximate cost: $14
