Left in tears...
I recently went to Illawarra medical centre for medical advice. When I made my booking over the phone I SPECIFICALLY asked for an appointment with a female GP. I mentioned this several times in the conversation and finished off by asking “is this dr a woman?” The answer was yes. I arrived for my appointment and after waiting for an hour a male doctor came out and said he was ready to see me.
I went to the receptionist very flustered. And she informed me the male doctor was very experienced and I had nothing to worry about, and then added - if they were to meet my “needs” I would have to wait another hour to see a female doctor.

I left crying, feeling defeated and belittled. And worried for the women in worse circumstances than myself being met with the same treatment. Very worrying and unprofessional

I absolutely love Dr Maskeil here. She is a wonderful asset. The doctors cost about $60, so after the medicare rebate it's about $30 out of pocket, which is expensive if you have been used to going to a bulk billing facility. They are often running late unfortunately, but a good doctor is worth a lot, I have wait over an hour before. There are a few doctors there who I also have found very good. There is one doctor who I would not go to but choosing doctors is a personal thing. Again, I love the staff at the front desk & Dr Maskeil is amazing.

I cannot recommend this surgery enough! After my family doctor of 20 years retired I looked long and hard for a new one. Went to many different surgeries and could not find one I actually felt comfortable with. Then a friend suggested the Illawarra Family Medical centre. I had a lot of problems health wise at the time and so I booked an appointment. The Doctor I saw was wonderful! She helped me enormously. I had to have a battery of tests but thankfully I only had to go downstairs as they have a radiology clinic, pathologist and Xray all in the one building. Also when I need to see my Doctor if she isnt there I have no hesitation in seeing another one as they are all great. Very friendly, kind and non judgemental. The reception staff are also helpful and friendly! Best Medical Centre in the area! Hard to get an appointment at first but thats because once you come here you will always come back to these doctors!
