I have been here a few times, but on my most recent visit (last year) I walked in and sat down at a table where another friend was already waiting. We sat and talked for about 40 minutes, and the whole time no one came up to me and asked if I wanted to order anything, not a coffee, water, food or anything. Needless to say I havnt been back. Otherwise it had always been good, just a really off day I think.

Globe has been around for years and years. I stopped going because it got pretty ordinary but it has recently changed hands and things have improved out of sight. There's been a minor reno, great new menu, regular live music (which adds to the mood rather than overpowering it) and a good atmosphere. As for food, if I walk into a restaurant and see lamb shanks on the menu nothing else stands a chance. Last time I went to Globe they had lamb shanks on the menu (possibly as a special). They were among the best I've had. Other meals have been just as good. All in all, highly recommended. Can't comment on the coffee as I'm not a coffee drinker!

Staff here are really wonderful and friendly. Was a little apprehensive about a brunch date set up with a friend as I hadn't really heard good things about it, but I don't know why! Food was exceptional, especially the hollandaise sauce, very memorable. The only downside was was my latte which wasn't that great but regardless the interiors are simple and clean and was quite an enjoyable experience overall.

Whenever I look for a cafe I would probably look at the customers inside before I go in. Some places just make their customers look miserable for no reason, and I would certainly stay out of that joint.
I just live down the lane-way next to this little gem near the quieter end of the Chapel. And half a years go by and I have never stepped into it - it's not that people inside looks suffering enough to drive me away, in contrast the crowd behind the glass facade are so enjoying the moment, either the bigger groups chatting in the back dinning room, or the small tables near the cashier, everyone are so focusing on enjoying, that you would imagine they are in their own universe - or momentary heaven to be exaggerate.
It is not until I found a quieter week day that I actually paid a visit to the joint, I understand and experience that momentary heavenly relaxation. The ambiance was lively, but quiet enough - so that you don't feel like sipping your latte in a library - while on the other hand it's not noisy like a pub - the high ceiling certainly doing it's job well. The glass facade gives the interior a lot of natural lights - in fact I can't recall where the lighting are positions in the shop, the sunlight reflected gently from the graffiti opposite the lane way, that is never too bright, never too warm. Sitting in the small table with the additive aroma of fresh brewing coffee, with lots of free magazine to choose from, my afternoon was easily slip though the space-time continuum - time to head home for reality.
Having said that I came back to try the food itself another time, the dishes were great, the ingredients are top of the list fresh, however not too surprisingly good - I hate to use the word ordinary as it implies something not really well done. The food in the Globe is just good as it is at it's best, nothing more, but nothing less. It would not give you a WOW surprise as if you are having a Molecular gastronomy adventure, however it does remind you what real food should taste like, i.e., the fresh veggie that tastes like real vegetable and juicy cherry tomatoes which guarantee to explode upon your chew. I guess it does not make a big difference nowadays for many people as majority of use are evolved to live with the supermarket shelf-stable products, therefore when it requires a few more bucks to defend freshness, it is hard to satisfy the crowd. However, consider the ambiance plus the lovely service in the Globe, I would say that few bucks well spent.
There's one short note though - the service and barrister are great, however the kitchen never keep up the pace, the meal always come after the coffee had gone cold, or I have finished the coffee, or and I already ordered a second cup. But for freshness like this without all the fuss to select ingredients in the market, I can live with that.

This place has changed into a more trendy elegant restaurant from the cafe it was in the past. The atmosphere is pleasant and the service is polite. I cannot fault the food. Tasty and well presented. Prices were about average for this type of food but I must confess that it took way to long to get our entrees and then much longer to get the mains.

Approximate cost: $28.00

Relaxing, layback unpretentious, range of free mags, don't feel uncomfortable dining alone. The cafe is very casual and natural compared to the flashy designer look in the rest of Chapel Street
