Basement on view is a quaint cafe with lots of rooms going off in different directions. It gets quite busy before or after a show at the capital, or when a big exhibition in on at the gallery.

The desserts are great, with a large selection, and the coffee is good too. Lots of different styles of chairs to choose from, with some comfy armchairs in a secluded corner or two.

Dinner here is also quite tasty, and they do serve you quickly if you have a show to get to at the capital theatre (above the cafe).

I love this place simply because they host bands and local hip hop groups, I've never eaten there but I've drank plenty. It's quite a nice place too, going underground and all, its a real basement, so if you're interested in an interesting place, this is your place.

Love this place! Quirky, rabbit-warren type setup with tables hidden around corners and in nooks - great place to have a private conversation. The menu is sophisticated and reasonably priced. Amenities are very clean. They are licenced, so grab a beer with your salad for lunch.

Was very happy to be going out with a friend on a Saturday morning doesn't usually happen. We went to the gallery and them had an early lunch at Basement On View. I had never been there before and it has been done up really nice inside was very quiet inside as we were the only ones there. The staff were polite and we both got something off the specials board. the food was delicious and so were the drinks but I did feel the prices were a little high. Still I really enjoyed myself and would go back again just for the atmosphere there.

We had lunch here today and were very disappointed all round from lack of staff to lack of quality food.
We wanted to order two different daily specials, neither was available so we had to chose other menu items. Llittle else held much appeal so I decided on a chicken schnitzel sandwich, for $16 I would have expected something of a higher standard. Both the bread and the schnitzel were dry and I have had better quality for half the price from Mayfair Park Diner.
The kids pizza was a slab of 'dough' that was under cooked with a couple of pieces of bacon/ham thrown on it.
My pot of tea came complete with a tea bag, not a leaf in sight! Not sure of the point of a pot with a tea bag in it, why not just put the bag straight into the cup?
The only thing that really was a positive of the whole experience was the babycinos came with marshmellows and lollies.
Won't be returning again.

Great review.. it almost seems impossile that so many things are wrong at a resturant.. but if one person has noticed it I'm sure the business will be shutdown soon.

Great environment here, the ambience is really lovely, complimented by the various artworks on display around the cafe, and subtly underscored by pleasant background music. Coffee was great, well-made and excellent value as well!! Definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a nice place to enjoy a coffee or cake (their cakes are also appetising and fresh-looking).

The Basement bar started as a Bar for middle aged people looking to enjoy a night out with classic bands singing music from the 60-80's, now it has been directed towards young people and somewhat strange and dissapointing bands. Add the fact that there is minimal space at this venue , you could not recommend

I think you are talking about a different venue. The Basement Bar is down near the fountain, whereas Basement on View is underneath the Capital Theatre.

Friendly staff but not enough of them - the restaurant was quite busy and appeared to be understaffed. Food was great, a lot of care had gone into the presentation. Affordable prices and yummy dessert menu. The venue is good being attached to the Art Gallery and Theatre. Hard to get parking out the front but plenty of car spaces in the parking area around the corner from the theatre.
