So this is a review of the Museum and the cafe on Level 4

So I recently took my four year old son to the museum which was about his 3rd visit in his life. We really go for the dinosaurs and the small paleontology pit which allows hit to dig up bones. He doesn't even watch the video on 4min loop, "boring."

At four years old, the stuffed animals really doesn't cut it when you see many of them alive at the zoo. Nor does any of the other exhibits.

He does love the kids zone area, which has a variety of toys, books, bean bags chairs and other activities for the kids to play with. As this is limited to kids under 5, going during the week allowed him to only have to share the are with a few other kids.

I really feel the Museum has a tiny window for kids between 4-7 I'm guessing. Otherwise I don't think he will be back until he's an adult.

Now the Cafe on level 4. Though it is more than your average cafe in terms of price it's not offensive and reasonable for a cafe in Sydney. The Wagyu burger, Barramundi with vegetables were all restaurant standard and coupled with the view of the Domain parklands, St Marys Cathedral and a glass of white. It was a perfect break at the museum, so the parents have enough energy to do it all again with the kids after lunch.

$15 entry (kids under 4 free), $20 for a nice lunch. A nice enjoyable day to be had.

Approximate cost: $15

We took the kids here after Christmas to see the " Dinosaur Exhibition" as my son is an avid Dinosaur fan. Here you can see, touch, smell all things dinosaurs. They had huge dinosaur skeletons which thrilled my kids, about 8 real life- sized models, displays where you can read and learn about the history of dinosaurs and high- tech interactive displays as well.

You can even hear dinosaur roars and sounds which thrilled the kids. It was $64 for us as a family of 4 for admission but we didn't really look at any other exhibits whilst we were here as we only came for my son and his love of dinosaurs. A great few hours spent for any prehistoric fan of all ages.

Approximate cost: $64

I came on a Monday during the school holidays with a friend from the US. We paid for $24 each for the Alexander the Great exhibit. The regular price would have been $12 and we could have gotten a 20% off discount because I had a voucher, but we paid the extra anyway for the extra exhibit. It wasn't worth the extra in my opinion. The general exhibition stuff was more interesting for me and my friend. We could have seen the skeletons, animal and rock exhibits for under $12 each, but we paid twice the price for a bit extra, which was really just a bunch of statues and other things that didn't interest us. Someone else who is more into history might find it more captivating though.

if you had to choose between this and the powerhouse museum which one would you go to?

Well what can I say it was interesting some of the staff are a bit dated to say the least, one of the older lady tour guides was like a crumpy old retired teacher guess you get that. Maybe I went on the wrong day Im sure they try their best and do some fantastic work but when in the public eye you must always be nice and children are our future so respect them please. Anyhow over all it was OK

I didn't ask the tour people anything. It was enough to look and read the exhibits for me.

Every Tuesday night the Australian Museum is turned into "Jurassic Lounge" cost is $14.00 from 5.30-9.30pm the museum is turned into a cool bar where you can walk around the museum and have a drink - there are also cool dj's in some areas... worth while!

Thanks for the tip. I might visit with a friend on a Tuesday night then.
