Others who have reviewed this place are right to state that it has gone downhill. St Kilda used to be a lovely, bustling hub, but now it seems to have lost its sheen. I recently went back for a holiday and was disappointed to discover that Acland Cakes looks like it needs a facelift. On the other hand, it still makes beautiful cakes, and melt-in-the-mouth canoli. Don't be too disheartened, if you're in the mood, Acland still delivers the flavour, if not the visual feast.

With a great variety of cake shops in St Kilda we decided to give this one a crack, the prices will a little bit pricey and the slice of cake wasn't that big but it tastes fantastic and would recommend it to my friends

Last time I came to Acland Street (about 8 years ago?), it was lined with the most delightful cake shops and bakeries. What has happened??? Acland Cakes is still there, yes, but it's a shadow of its former self. It's daggy, dingy and has none of the old pizzazz it was famous for. The wall behind the counter used to be shelved with lots of gorgeous cakes and pastries on display for sale. Now, the variety is not there, the shop itself looks forlorn and I was incredibly disappointed. I did buy a coffee scroll which itself was ok but it tasted nothing like I hoped because it wasn't eaten in the ambience of an old world store. Sad.

Having been to this place previously and been pleased with the service and of course our cake, unfortunately I must now rewrite this review to give it 1 star.

We went along to this cafe for dessert recently and were absolutely disappointed!! My skinny latte was burnt tasting of the coffee and after having one sip I had to leave it.

I ordered a cannolli cake which was grossly overpriced at $5.30 when at other cake shops/cafes it would be about $2 or $3 each! The shelling was crispy, but the custard inside was little hard and not as soft as it should be served. So I question of the freshness of this particular cake.

Service by the staff was very slack ... the young lady there looked at me blankly when I approached the counter to place my order and did not have the courtesy of giving me a smile or "can i help you please". In my opinion she lacked the knowledge of the cakes when I ordered my particular cake.

Its cash only, so make sure you go to the ATM first.

Please save your money and go elsewhere for your cake and coffee along Ackland Street in my humble opinion.

Cakes here are really nice, they have a vast variety of them and most importantly they have European cakes ( so difficult to find anywhere else, except on Ackland St)...they are bit pricey, but worth of it :)price from $5 onwards...

I must have gone on the wrong day as th both of our cakes were very stale and so expensive I couldn't believe it when she said how much. My friend's coffee was average, my herb tea very nice. The service was OK. Overall, unfortunately the hype is more than the reality for this Acland St cake shop.

These cakes and desserts look so appetizing from the display window. Presentation of the desserts is good and more importantly they taste fantastic. Also serve coffee here.
