This review is for Fullers Bookshop, Hobart TAS

verified email - 29 Oct 2008

Fullers leave me divided. I love the range of books, and some of the staff are lovely, but on a couple of occasions they have left me absolutely flummoxed, most notably when I overheard a young girl at the counter asking if they had any of the Paris Hilton book in stock. Now admittedly, Ms Hilton's book is a long way from Fuller's standard range - picture hard cover classics, Booker prize winners, beautiful art and lifestyle books, things you wouldn't be embarrassed to have on display at a dinner party, but the tone of voice and the look on the staff member's face as she proclaimed they didn't stock "that sort of book" was so condescending and insulting that I had to leave the shop without making my intended purchase that day. To make it even less understandable, they seemed quite happy to sell Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series despite the fact that it is a long way from "improving" teenage fiction.
Their loyalty club is also quite good if you intend to spend over $500 in a two year period.

EDIT: for the third year running they have recommended Michelle Paver's series to me for my niece (now 13). Surely there is SOMETHING else that has been published over that time that a girl who loves fantasy would enjoy?

This review is for Funky Homes, Hobart TAS

Funky Homes is a giftware shop specializing in (as the name suggests) funky gifts. The owner has an eye for things which are a bit different, and cover all ages from babies through to things that the more trendy grandparents will appreciate. I especially love going in there to choose wedding presents, as the owner's suggestions are always spot on and her giftwrapping is second to none (one less thing to worry about).

This review is for Art Mob, Hobart TAS

verified email - 29 Oct 2008

The owner of this gallery has all the time in the world for customers and goes out of his way to share his knowledge and love of the Aboriginal Art he sells. Prices cover a range of budgets, the colours, the designs, the stories are fantastic, and he welcomes (well controlled) children. Stock is also on display in the atrium and at Ci Simon.
When I win Tattslotto, this is the first place I will visit to invest my ill-gotten gains :D

This review is for Ci Simon, Hobart TAS

verified email - 29 Oct 2008

Ci Simon is fantastic, I absolutely love them to death. The clothes are stylish, comfy and affordable (think Target prices). They also stock glass nail files, wallets and other small gift type items.
The real reason you should visit them though is for the bravado pants. Australian made, a variety of styles and a huge range of colours, they're stretchy and really forgiving about a whole range of paranoid body types. They also wear really well and most importantly, at around $50 a pair, you can afford to have a few in your wardrobe. Up to size 20 (I think).

*Edit* I bought a pair of bravado pants in ink just prior to writing my original post (so think 12 months ago), and have worn them at least 3 full days a week in a job that involves crawling on the floor, hefting heavy boxes as well as just generally trying to look presentable for customers. I just toss them in a lingerie bag with a regular dark wash and they still look like new (no saggy knees).
You really need to buy a pair!

This review is for Jam Packed, Hobart TAS

verified email - 29 Oct 2008

Jam packed is a great place to meet friends for brunch or an informal lunch, the coffees are consistently fantastic, and the atrium area of the IXL/Henry Jones complex is possibly the best place in Hobart to spend a sunny winter's day (all the enjoyment of being outside without the biting wind). Beware though the kitchen was closed at 3.00 on one visit due to staff shortages, so don't leave it too late for lunch. Their giftshop has a range of quirky kitchen utensils, lollies (some novelty confectionery for the kids), and various other Tasmanian food goodies perfect for tourists. If you have a Hobart Advantage Card, you'll score 10% off purchases from the gift area too.

This review is for Mures Upper Deck, Hobart TAS

verified email - 29 Oct 2008

Mures Upper Deck has just been fully refurbished and the new look is lovely, although it can be hard to concentrate on the decor given the outstanding views of the surrounding docks across to the old IXL building. Dishes are predominantly seafood - the platter in particular is fantastic, my favourite non-seafood dish is the lamb backstrap on polenta. Look out for the two and three course deals at lunchtime too for great value. Staff are lovely and helpful without being intrusive

This review is for Dilgers Caltex, Howrah TAS

verified email - 25 Oct 2008

The Dilger family have been operating from the same site ever since i can remember, and in an entire lifetime of buying petrol, I've never struck any of the staff having a bad day. They actually come to you, and put the petrol in, they'll check your tyres and wash the windscreen and the price is always within a couple of cents of the nearby shell servo.

This review is for Resource Recycling Shop (The Tip Shop), Hobart TAS

verified email - 24 Oct 2008

The prices here are generally more than at the other two tip shops (although this may be because of the rent costs in the CBD?), but it's a fantastic place if you're after interesting bits and pieces to decorate your house with, or make an unusual art work. Heaps of books, natty clothes and surprises too.
Make sure you mention your Hobart Advantage card as it scores you 10% off.

This review is for Mazbah Coffee Lounge, Hobart TAS

Consistent and great coffees, their mochas and hot chocolates are made with a fantastic syrup that means they are probably the best in Hobart. The lunches and brekkies are great - soup is always a excellent choice

This review is for La Cuisine Trafalgar, Hobart TAS

Love their sourdough rolls, cheap as and with a real "sour dough" taste. Their danishes are lovely and sticky, and their mix of salads are always fantastic and a bit different from the usual greek salad type usually on offer
