This review is for Mountain Gate Fish Shop, Ferntree Gully VIC

verified email - 17 Jul 2016

We were a long way from home and hungry but instead of fish and chips, as we were driving, decided to try a souvlaki instead. Now, I like these and eat one when I can, but I'd have to say that the quality was reasonable but nothing to write home about. Meat was not very tender at all and salad didn't seem fresh. There was a reasonable waiting time too even though only one other person in the shop.

On a visit to a lovely seaside town, what else for lunch except to sample the local fish and chips? Of course it was quite busy on this holiday day but the service was fairly quick. Just a short wander to the interesting collectibles shop next door and then it was done.

Chips were good, consistent standard and well cooked, potato cakes were a little thin and too crunchy for my liking but the others had no problem with theirs. The fish itself was the type with the thin, crunchy batter and it was a little overcooked, but the fish itself inside was very nice.
Of course they offer all manner of other burgers and snacks too. For a family of five, the cost was quite reasonable for a touristy area.

This review is for Alex's Barber Shop, Altona North VIC

With three men in my family, and having our old barber retire, it was a bonus to find this new business opened up close to us. The shop is modern and clean, free tea and coffee available to those waiting and the service is totally professional and friendly.

The owner, Alex and his co-worker provide a first class service to all guys who want to look after their hair - whether it's a traditional older man's style or something new and cutting edge.

My husband and two sons are all happy with their hair cuts and the price is very reasonable.

This review is for Jovani's Pizza & Pasta, Ascot Vale VIC

verified email - 24 Apr 2016

The best thing about Jovani's is that they were open late. We were on the way home from a show and very hungry - not a lot on offer until we saw shining red and green lights in the distance. We were told we couldn't eat in and had to take away. Okay, I could deal with that but ... there were other patrons sitting at tables who seemed to be in no hurry to go?
We had three different pizzas - capricciosa, Hawaiian and the Jovani special. There are actually 5 sizes to choose from, the largest being Jumbo. Prices range from $7.50 to $25 and there are other things on the menu too but not at this time of night, it appears.
Our pizzas were okay, certainly edible but nothing to rave about and mine was definitely undercooked and soggy in the middle so that the onion was still crunchy.
Maybe I'd go back at an earlier time to see if things are different but, believe me, I won't be hurrying.

This review is for Red Rocks Charcoal Chicken, Yarraville VIC

I was needing quick tea one night and discovered this little shop at the Yarraville Square complex just off Williamstown Road. It's on the main shopping strip of this square with other food and service shops. The huge carpark enables you to get a spot day or night but watch out for the extremely steep driveway onto the main road (ruts in the bitumen!) and go slow so you don't scrape your car.

The shop offers many chicken based meals and snacks of course, but I was wanting a meal for family so opted for the whole chicken. Although it was very nice, I must say it was a little small for $13.75 considering the supermarket has them on a super special at the moment. Only just managed to feed us for tea whereas I usually have some left over for sandwiches.

I also got some potato bake which was lovely and there was creamy pasta on offer as well.

Friendly staff who filled my order quickly. Worth a try.

This review is for Spot on Panels Smash Repair Centre, Sunshine VIC

verified email - 21 Feb 2016

Had a fairly traumatic prang (driver rounding corner headed straight for me !) but luckily we both swerved out of the way somewhat and my front right panel was damaged. These guys were able to make by car look like brand new - honestly, you can't see at all where the incident occurred and my car was out of action for about 4 days which is pretty good.

I'd certainly recommend them. Also vacced out the interior and gave the exterior a clean as well!

This review is for Chatz In Brighton, Brighton VIC

This seemed like a nice shop, clean and conveniently situated near the railway station (Gardenvale) and there were plenty of people in there which is a good sign, but they have no prices on the fish list which is always a little worrying and so when I ordered, I had no way of knowing how much it would all cost. The sign says "prices subject to change" etc but I still think they should put something up there. Just four flake, small chips and one dim sim was $38 and I don't consider that good value at all.

Also sign says "under new management" and the girl we had at the till seemed very new and didn't quite know what to do, but she was nice enough to bring out our order to the outside table (because she'd forgotten to give me the numbered receipt, I think).
Quality was good - thick cut chips, nice crispy batter and soft fish but atmosphere brought down by a very loud "wine bar" type situation a few doors up with booming music and people drinking.

So, nice fish but not quite worth the cost.

This review is for Kebab Hut, St Kilda VIC

verified email - 31 Oct 2015

My friend and I were looking for a friendly but economical place to eat and wow, Kebab Hut hit the spot. Instead of just opting for your normal meat kebab with salad etc, we went for the shared option of a Lamb platter for $16.50 and this was definitely a winner. You get great value of a lovely plate with meat, salads and lots of dipping sauces - the two of us could hardly get through it all. And so delicious! Also have pides, chips, various combos available and pleasant atmosphere with seating. Open at 11.00 am every day and because of the location don't close until 3.00 am a lot of days. So if you get the hungries in the middle of the night, head for here!

This review is for Sofia Restaurant, Camberwell VIC

verified email - 08 Oct 2015

Was in need of some quick food between appointments and having been to the other Sofia's, thought I'd try this one. It's great to be able to find a genuine pizza shop which is open late and night and not just chain stores. The small pizza was very nice, as I expected it to be, had plenty of toppings and tasted very fresh and delicious. Great staff and quick service.

This review is for Highlander Haven Motel, Maryborough VIC

verified email - 06 Oct 2015

This place is attractive as it's unusual. It consists of a lovely old house which is a reception/convention centre type arrangement and can be booked for weddings etc. And then in the area around that there are separate motel room like cabins with a nice garden separating them. We're not talking luxury accommodation here, but everything you would reasonably want - comfortable double bed, clean and quiet, plenty of parking for cars, caravans and trucks. Facilities in the cabin for tea and coffee and so friendly and nice owners.
Also such a good price - cheaper than all the rest but just as good!

Approximate cost: $75
