Great restaurant in China Town.
Excellent dumplings and noodle soups.
As other reviewers have mentioned you certainly don't get 'great' service but they are far from rude so it doesn't really impact on the dining experience in my opinion.
We visited on Chinese New Year and it was packed...even then we only had to wait about 15 minutes for a table (for 7 of us)
15/16 dumplings on a plate for only $6.80 or $7.50 and they are good!! Plenty of options on the menu aside from dumplings. We also had the Pancake with spring onions (Shallot Pancake) and it was one of the best I'd had.
Great experience if you're looking for reasonably priced authentic asian.
Approximate cost: $7 - $12
Cheap, authentic, quick dumplings. Service can be pretty average but it is still far better than Camy Shanghai Dumpling House just down the road. I usually get 15 fried vegetarian dumplings which are always value for money. The place is BYO too and the decor is cute.
Staff can be non existent but the food comes out really quick. Dumplings are pretty cheap. Wide variety of dumpling choices. Tasty and cheap enough to come back again.
This is my go-to restaurant for authentic and cheap Chinese in the city. Simple, authentic meals served on rice are only $7.50, and very tasty. It's only a small restaurant, so in peak times you may have to wait for a table, and the service is a bit average, but the meals are brought out very quickly. I've never actually tried the dumplings here though... that's next on my to-do list!
Approximate cost: $7.50
There are so many dumpling places in Melbourne and this one is defintely one of the oldest but not the best. The dumplings here are greasy, pretty bland and there are no juices in the filling at all. The dan dan noodles I had was oily, however the noodles itself are pretty good.
This place pretty much does the exact same thing Shanghai Dumplings does - super cheap dumplings, BYO with next to no corkage etc but in my opinion it's much nicer. The staff are uninterested (sometimes to the point of being rude) but it honestly doesn't bother me when I can get 15 dumplings for $8.50 or whatever it is. We had a 20 min wait on Friday night but like I said, I think it's worth it for such a cheap and yummy feed. I think if I came back I'd try for a week night - if you've been disappointed with Shanghai Dumplings going down hill, try this instead. Same but better
Approximate cost: $8
A great little place for cheap but good dumplings. The decor is basic and a little worse for wear but this is one of the few places I am happy to wait in line (as the dumplings are pretty good) for. When I walked in for the first time, I thought I walked into a movie set of an Asian movie in the 60's! Pretty cool and such a novelty.
The other dishes taste pretty good too. Traditional simple Shanghai style dishes. Make sure you try the dumplings, noodles and pumpkin dumpling cakes.
Food is served quickly, don't expect great service and not a place to linger in but great for a quick workday lunch or dinner with friends and colleagues.
Recommended for great value dumplings!
Service is pretty bad at this place
Love getting dumplings here! great food, super cheap. service is rushed cos it's always busy, but that's fine, a cheap dumpling place doesn't need to have silver service.
Approximate cost: $6
Good dumplings but I miss my Ding Tai Fung from asia - you don't know a good dumpling until you have tried one of theirs
Approximate cost: $12
Another cheap restaurant. Great little atmosphere of restaurant with a real village look. Food great value and promptly served.
