This is the best pie shop I have ever been. Their reputation as 'The best pie in Victoria' displayed on a banner at the front speaks for itself. The shop is always chockablock as many are after their tasty and large-range pies. My trip to the Dandenongs will not be complete without it. TWO THUMBS UP!!!

Well I don't say this very often, but this experience was absolutely abhorrent.

On my husband's birthday we decided to celebrate with a trip to the Dandenongs. We got to Olinda and saw the Pie in the Sky sign and thought 'beauty, a quick easy meal for our trip'. So in we go...and that's when the fun started.

The place was completely crowded. People were displaced all over the place. Screaming kids, red faced mothers, staff with frowns and flustered expressions. Once we got to the counter, we were so flummoxed that we made the quickest of orders, said take-away so we could get out of the shop, and made a run for the doors. Once outside, and able to breathe again, we jumped on an empty table and started eating our pies.

Having been sitting there for five minutes, we were just about done when a waitress came out and shouted at us to get off the table because it was for 'Dining In' customers. I replied that we didn't know that. She then abruptly pointed at a sign behind us that explained her point and said 'can't you read the sign?'. We were both so surprised that we didn't know what to do. Yes, we were clearly in the wrong but neither of us expected such rudeness. The waitress then turned on her heels and walked away.

We both immediately began to collect our things as she came storming out again. This time, snatching at an empty bottle on the table and telling us to 'leave now' so she could seat some other customers who were waiting for us to move.

This time I replied. "You really don't have to be so rude about this. We just didn't see the sign". She told us that it was written everywhere and that she had people who wanted us to go so they could sit down.

Considering it was my husband's birthday and I didn't want it to be any more confronting than it was, we both quickly got a move on, and promised ourselves to never, ever return to such a rude, badly organised establishment ever again.

The whole experience was so ordinary. But what I fail to understand is that, irrespective, we were still paying customers and had every right to sit down at an empty table (which was still empty 10 minutes after we'd left and was driving past). We made the initial mistake because we were feeling so pushed and prodded in the line that we just couldn't wait to get outside. We said take-away simply to get our pies in bags. When we were in line there was nothing that stated we couldn't sit down. Maybe it was obscured by the amount of people in there, but this isn't a reason for the staff to be so rude.

While I accept it was our mistake, I cannot explain why this staff member felt it so necessary to be so unbelievably rude. I have never been spoken to in such an abrupt and confronting way by an employee of a place I have just purchased something from.

I would never recommend this place and it's been a long time since we went there, but I still feel so angry from this experience that I felt compelled to write this review.

If you go there, good luck and make sure you read the signs! You never know, they might limit the amount of toilet paper you're allowed to use, based on the price of their pies.

Hi Margec,
I'm really delighted that you have had much better experiences than I, at Pie in the Sky. This review is completely honest and for what it's worth, it details an experience I felt needed to be said. That is the beauty of having a website like WOMOW where you can find a variety of different reviews and experiences, which provide you with a holistic picture of an establishment.
Yes, the other reviews on here are far more pleasing than mine, which may very well have been a one off event. I have detailed my experience to allow others to make their own judgements.
My review is not to destroy this business, nor because I hold a grudge, or wanted to take 'payback'. I made the decision to write this review because I truly had a terrible experience and felt that it was appropriate to state so. Obviously this business is popular as it is still operating successfully.
My review, if anything, allows others who visit this business to ensure they follow the rules that I misunderstood, which will in turn ensure they have a pleasant experience.
I truly felt the value and quality of the pies were not of high standard, and the overall service was poor also.
My apologies if I have offended you in some way, but my idea of this website is to ensure there is a wide variety of experiences that the public can use to educate and inform themselves of the organisations they wish to use. Naturally, when opinions differ, there is bound to be some disagreement, however, isn't that what healthy debate is all about?

Hehe. Yeah. I've been there and while I haven't quite had it this bad, I have had pretty bad service here. The pies are ok but not world class. I do feel you've been picked on a bit here though. Funny how you put on one bad review and people who don't agree can't hack it!

i would also like to add here that we had terrible service here one sunday last august. This shop had been reccomended to me by a work friend,so my hubby and i decided what better way to warm ourselves up one winters day and have a pie. They were extremely busy and shortstaffed,so our initial thought was, should we bother? But the smell was calling me in! Bad move.....we waited 40 mins in the queue, then 45 mins after we ordered.Hubby asked a few times, what the hold up was and kept getting shrugged off.Everyone was getting irritable, after all there were lots of grumbling tummys.Eventually we had our meal and it was good, but not worth that much wait,As we walked out,i said that we also should have just got take away and eaten somewhere else.I found staff frazzled to the max,not necessarily rude but i wont go back in any hurry and will NOT reccomend. This website is for honest reviews and i will happily put more up now that i know about this website and if they are good,i will shout it out!!

We always bring overseas visitors to Pie in the Sky for a hearty meal of good ol' Aussie pies. Great day trip spot and the variety of pies offered is always a difficult choice. I also quite like that you can get a number of different sides with the pie. Service is good too.

Lovely pies and a great selection too. I especially love that you can eat in or take pies home with you. They do a devonshire tea which is divine too, the atmosphere is good and the table service as well.

A very very good place to go for a day trip. Have a wide varieties of pies. I enjoy the tandoori chicken pie. It was spicy and hot very good especially for those who like spicy food.

The pies are amazing! I have gone there several times and will continue to visit when I'm in the area. I love the pies, and they are quite cheap (ranging from $4-6 for pie only) and there is a lot of variety. Only criticism is that on busy days (weekends) you can't always get the type of pie you would like, but that isn't really their fault because they do get VERY busy. All in all, a great place :)

I enjoyed a nice pastie and fresh salad with friendly staff that made the dining experience special. Very comfortable even through it was a very hot day.

I visit Olinda regularly it has some lovely shops to browse in and have always enjoyed their great variety of pies and fantastic service.

Love the pies here. So much variety, you'll find something for everyone. Big portions at great prices. While the pies are fantastic, the sides are only ok. Lovely atmosphere and great service. Desserts are a little overpriced. So close to really great little crafty stores.

Approximate cost: $10.00

Great pies and other food in a cosy setting in the township of Olinda.
Huge range of delicious pies and pasties. Other food available. Sit by the fire on a cold day. Can be very busy on a sunday around lunchtime like everywhere else in the Dandenongs but worth the wait.

Approximate cost: $12

The pies here really are great! We had ours with chips and peas which were just okay, but the pies were really good. It was very crowded the day we went but they have a good system for allocating tables and we only waited about 15 minutes. We will definitely be back.

Approximate cost: $11
