A great range of secondhand books stacked to the ceilings! Organised by categories and topics I can spend hours finding hidden gems. Also has a good range of fantasy. The staff are helpful and know their books.

This month of August the Merchant is holding a major sale to clear stock. Discounts of up to 50% are available and the discount amount depends on the amount of the sale. Their new website is: home.iprimus.com.au/cammicro/mof and all sale conditions are listed there. Anyone wanting to buy books would be crazy not to visit the shop and have a browse, it is a wonderful experience.

Approximate cost: $varies

I love the atmosphere here. There are narrow shelves with book piled up to the ceiling. You can get a good bargain here, and trade your own books in. The owner is really friendly too.
There's so much charm here - There was once a family portrait in the window that had a note on it, saying something like 'this picture was found in a box of books. Do you know these people so we can return it?'. You don't find that at Borders!

This book store has a vast supply of second hand books and cover just about every category. In general, the price of the books are reasonable. Some books are first editions and the price for them is in accordance to their value. The Merchant of Fairness will also value your books for a small fee if they have to do extensive research.

One of the best bookshops in Melbourne with around 100,000 titles in categorised stock. Wide reference collection and excellent fiction range also. Militarian, antiquarian and thousands of other rare collectible titles. A must visit for any discerning buyer looking for the elusive book.

A quirky little stall with books balancing on every flat surface (and the Balwyn store is only for VERY THIN people because its full of books). The staff will look for special books if you ask, and they run a swap system for regular customers.
