Mixed feelings about this place...
It is located inside Crown, and therefore maintains a certain standard.
The fitout is very good. No expense spared from what I can see. It is a really nice opulent fitout, extending even into the bathrooms. It does wonders for the atmosphere. You really do feel as if you have been transported into the middle kingdom to dine in a chinese palace.
The food and service are less impressive however. Whilst we did not experience anything worth raising a complaint about, the feeling was that the food and service were not quality up to the standard expected given the price point. The dumplings were probably the best thing on the menu, if you came to dine. The other dishes are fairly average.

My main quibble with this place is that it's clearly not set up for English speakers. For example, on the menu out the front, the first thing on the 'vegetarian' menu contained chicken!! >:( The actual menu only contained very rough English translations of the dishes. I ordered a string bean dish, but when I placed my order, the waiter told me it contained pork! I said, 'no, I'm vegetarian'; there was absolutely no indication that pork had been part of the dish. Imo that's a VITAL piece of information to include in a translation!!! So anyway, I was expecting a mixed veggie/bean kind of dish, but was a little startled when I was literally served just a plateful of beans. Don't get me wrong; they were very tasty, but if I'd known about a) the fact that it was originally meat-based and b) the lack of variety, I would have ordered something different! Not keen to return as the translations are so poor that it's unclear to me what I'm even ordering. Also more than 23 bucks for a plate of beans is a major rip-off, if you ask me.

Approximate cost: $23

Great decor and everything but gosh can the service be any worse? I said excuse me a few times and nobody heard me so I stood up and went up to the waiters. It's a posh place and it is not cheap and cheerful, so bad that I will not come back. The dumplings were expensive and I just expected better service for this amount that I am paying.

A slightly more upmarket version of Hu Tong in more ritzy-commercial surrounds within the Crown complex. A very full on 'boss' like chinese atmosphere - from the table settings, to the general interior and decor. The food itself is similar to the menu at Hu Tong, albeit somewhat pricier. Taste wise, I could not discern much difference.
My personal view is that I would be unlikely to return, as everything which Man Tong offers to available else where in more cosy surrounds and at a better value.

i'm tempted to check it out just to see what a 'boss' atmosphere looks like!

This restaurant is the sister restaurant of Hu Tong which specializes in northern Chinese food.

We attended this restaurant for dinner and found that the dishes were good however not of the same standard as the original restaurant - Hu Tong.

The xiao loong bao - dumplings with soup arrived and were okay, but were easily broken when lifted out of the steamer and lost the soup. The only safe way in the end was to use a spoon to lift them out. This meant that the pastry was too thin and should have been a bit thicker to properly hold in the soup.

The other dumplings were good but nothing exciting to the taste buds. We also ordered a few dishes including stir fried eggplant in Szechuan Chilli sauce and a Tofu and veggie hot pot. The eggplant was good and the chefs were also able to temper the heat of the chilli so that it was enjoyable. The tofu and veggies however lacked any special flavor and was quite plain. Service was a little lacklustre as the waitress really could only speak Mandarin and had problems understanding English so we normally tried to flag down another waiter but they kept walking past too fast!

Overall the place is okay, however with a bit more attention from the waiters/waitresses and a bit more flavor added to the food the place could have scored better.

Approximate cost: $22
