High tea at Azuma.
This is a lovely little surprise in the collection of eateries inside Chifley.
There are two options for high tea: Kyoto or Tokyo. The Kyoto high tea ($25) is a bento box with a mix of savoury and sweet options and your choice of coffee or tea. The Tokyo high tea ($32) is served on a stand and contains the items in the Kyoto high tea plus a few other goodies, most notably chiffon cake. We went for the Tokyo offering.
Tea was a blend of roasted rice and matcha. There are a few other choices, including a really good green tea cappuccino
The tea stand offers a selection of japanese inspired savoury and sweet options.
On top were the savoury options - essentially sushi rolls (containing cucumber, asparagus etc) topped with sweet creamy salmon. They were prettily presented. But otherwise pretty ordinary.
On the bottom layer we have the sweets selection. Creme brulee, fruit salad with champagne jelly, rolled green tea cake, and gateau chocolate. As well as the stand, we were served an additional plate of which was part of the Tokyo high tea. The plate consisted of a slice of chocolate chiffon cake, a homemade scone, chantilly cream and strawberry preserve.
Azuma's high tea offers an alternative to the usual continental style high teas. For the price paid, I thought it was ok.
I was not particularly impressed by the savoury options. Sushi rolls that I could have eaten at any average sushi outlet.
As for the sweets, whilst they were acceptable from a technical perspective, again they were items which I could easily have purchased from a decent patisserie, not much better than breadtop.

Awesome review! This café sounds really appealing and authentic, I will definitely make a point of checking it out.

The mutcha latte is good, their cakes are yum and special, I like the mutcha cake and chestnut cake, and their green tea yogurt ice cream is interesting too. The shop is a bit small and noisy sometimes. I often sit at tables of Tonton (the same owner).

Approximate cost: $5-6.5

The desserts here are mostly hits (so far, only 1 miss). The green tea yogurt is really creamy and heaven on a hot day (though a stronger green tea flavour would be good) - the green tea roll and mont blanc are also great. I didn't like the apple pie however; the filling-to-pastry ratio erred on the pastry side. Heads-up: The eat-in prices are nearly $1 more than the takeaway price.

Approximate cost: $6
