This great Asian restaurant covers a wide range of Chinese and Chinese influenced flavours while accommodating the Aussie market. Both Southern and Northern style dishes feature heavily on the menu, and of course there are Singapore influences as well (things like lemon chicken).

The menu comes with lots of photos, which makes it easier to decide what to order.

Of course we had to have the classic sichuan fish dish (you eat around the chilies in the soup, you don't eat the chilies) , the green beans (four seasons beans while I like to call silly beans because I once misread the Chinese name of the beans) and the fried tofu. We were only going for a light meal, so we didn't go crazy.

Came here for afternoon tea and was surprised that there's a small selection of yum cha items. Had the xiao long bao (which was recommended as one of the more popular dishes) and a selection of other dishes including tofu "noodles" with sesame oil and coriander (my friend loved this), fried lobok cake and deep fried bean curd skin with prawn filling (I liked this the best).

When I go here, it's usually at the instigation of a group of people and I have no say in the matter. Reason being, as a vegetarian, you are very poorly catered for at this venue. They do have non-meat items on the menu, but most of the time these have been unavailable. When I do order dumplings, they seem to come long after the rest of the order so I am left to hurry my food after everyone else has already eaten.

Having said that, my friends love this place so perhaps if you're a meat eater, this might be the venue for you. Service is generally efficient (barring the unavailable foods) and the window at the front makes it a real treat to walk past and see the dumplings being made.

Compared to Hong Kong, these dumplings don't compare in taste or value. But for what they are, value is about on par and if you want a little taste of Hong Kong, it's not too bad from here.

Approximate cost: $7

I have been several times over the past two years. I now go the dumplings and xiao long bao but skip the regular plated food which is mediocre. I have tried several of the regular plated dishes but none did much for me. The plain xiao long bao on the other hand are very well done. The wrappers are fine and light, the soup sweet and warm, the meat filling moist. Take care not to break the wrapper when picking it up from the bamboo basket or you will lose the luscious soup! The slightly fancy, more expensive colored, flavoured type, while still good are not as yummy as the plain ones. The other dumpling types such as meat buns are also of reasonable quality. Although anything fried came out quite oily as if the oil was not hot enough or were not drained of paper toweling. Taste Gallery started doing Yum Cha as well which I tired once and found not to be not in the Cantonese tradition (understandably for a Shanghai restaurant) e.g the char siu bao (BBQ pork buns) had soggy, heavy pastry not the normal light and fluffy type, although the filling was OK. I would rather go to Parkland or Landmark for yum cha and dim sum. Restaurants that try to please too many people end up pleasing none if they are not careful. Stick to your lovely Shanghai xiao long bao and leave the Yum Cha to the Cantonese :-)

Note: price rating given for mains (which aren't that good) from 10 to 20, while xiao long bao are, 8 for $9 traditional (best choice), and 8 for $13 coloured/flavoured/crab meat (soso).

Approximate cost: $15

Their dumplings is definitely one of the best in brisbane - a must order at everyvisit! Apart from the "xiaolongbao" dumplings, they also have the traiditional dumplings on the menu, which are also great. Their cold side dishes are very disappoiting though, for example I ordered the cold duck once and there was little to eat - all skin and bones!!!
