This review is for Mount Alexander Winery, Sutton Grange VIC

We were out for a drive and came across a 'Café' sign with a big arrow out in the middle of nowhere (almost - Sutton Grange actually) Intrigued, we followed the sign along a dirt road and not too long after, came up to Mount Alexander Winery. We were greeted by the owners who were very friendly. The building with a verandah right around is set in acres of furtile farmland. We opted for coffee but a range of light lunches which looked very inviting were also on offer.

There are a range of wines available and the winery cellar door is open on weekends and public holidays or by appointment for tastings and sales from 10AM to 5PM. I didn't try any on this visit but I can say their cappuccino was one of the best I have had in a long long time. We went away glad we came across this gem not too far from Bendigo, and we will certainly be visiting again to have some lunch and maybe sample some wines.

When I noticed hearing loss along with the insistence of my partner that there was something wrong with my hearing, I went along to a nearby audiologist so I could have my hearing tested. Look at it this way… it's like your brakes failing in your car - you don't notice until they are really needed. Hearing is like that, it slowly gets worse without you even noticing.

It turned out I had moderate hearing loss in my left ear and increasing loss in my right. The staff at Butterfly Audiology guided me through the whole process smoothly from my initial testing, through to the fitting and later maintenance of my hearing aid(s). After sales support (if you could call it that for a medical related business) is excellent and the staff are professional, friendly and helpful. They also run classes to help people with coping strategies to deal with hearing loss which are very informative and useful.

If you need to have a hearing checkup or are looking for a quality Audiologist for management of existing hearing conditions,, then Butterfly Audiology is for you.

This review is for Peter Ashman Dental Prosthetist, Bendigo VIC

I had the need for a full set of dentures after 'full clearance' of my teeth. I was recommended to
Peter Ashman who, on my first visit, advised that I wait for at least a few months for my gums to settle down after the extractions I had. This proved to be good advice as getting dentures fitted too soon would result in the need for return visits for adjustments. I was very happy to learn he cared more for getting the work done correctly the first time rather than getting me back for further appointments.

I found the whole process to be without pain or worry as Peter was efficient, professional and informative throughout my vists from the first consultation until the final fitting and follow-up visit. His slogan says it all - 'Confidence Is a Well Fitting Denture & Natural Smile'. He is very experienced and takes pride in his work and my outcome was a well fitting comfortable good looking set of teeth. I would recommend him to anyone in need of this kind of service.

I will mention that parking outside his premises is a little tricky owing to McIvor being a busy road and having to dodge trees along there which look very nice but make it hard to park between.

This review is for Haven, Bendigo VIC

We were on the waiting list for affordable housing with Haven for a period of time before they called us to offer a property. Being on low income and at the mercy of the private rental market and greedy ruthless real estate agents is a constant battle so we were delighted to be offered a quality unit in a good area, at an affordable price.

To say we are grateful to Haven is an understatement as we will be very happy in our new place we can finally call home and to have pride in what we have. We are now happy in the knowledge we finally have long term accommodation security after having bad experiences with real estate agent property managers through no fault of our own.

If you are on a low income and having issues with housing affordability, you can't go past giving Havens friendly professional staff a call to discuss your circumstances.

This review is for Dr. Andrew Gibson - Ophthalmology, Bendigo VIC

verified email - 12 Sep 2013

I was referred to DR. Gibson for a second opinion about the state of my vision after cataract surgery and a confirmation of a diagnosis of Glaucoma by another eye specialist. Mr Gibson was very thorough in his examination and was very forthcoming with information I needed to know about my condition. In fact I was told more during this visit than I had given to me in 12 months of visits to other eye professionals.

I would therefore highly recommend Mr. Gibson if you are in need of specialist eye care and treatment.

This review is for Apco Service Station, Bendigo VIC

verified email - 24 Aug 2013

The fuel prices at APCO are very competitive. Yhey have a good range of grocery or snack products. They have the best chicken wings - we will always drop by for some of those even if we don't need fuel. The staff are friendly and always helpful.

This is a great service station to fill up if you are heading south to Melbourne from Bendigo.

I was referred to Glaucoma specialist Mr Shiu after other investigations into my vision indicated eye pressure problems and the possibility I may have Glaucoma. My initial consultation with Mr Shiu was not ideal as I thought he was quite arrogant and appeared abrupt. I cannot rely on my impression as he informed me that I had, in fact, advanced Glaucoma, so my reaction to this news left me with negative feelings about my appointment with him.

On a follow-up appointment, I was quite happy with the encounter, and also quite impressed with his expertise and how he is managing my case. Perhaps he doesn't score 10 points in people skills, but he certainly knows what he is talking about.

As with other medical specialists, be sure to ask lots of questions, as getting the answers you need won't happen unless you ask.

This review is for DR Robert Buttery - Vitreoretinal Surgeon, East Melbourne VIC

verified email - 21 Aug 2013

Mr Buttery is a visiting Retina specialist to Bendigo Eye Clinic. I was referred to him after I experienced some complications after cataract surgery caused by a genetic condition I have. Mr Buttery thoroughly investigated my vision issues, but as it turned out, there was not a lot he could do in my particular case unfortunately. He is extremely good at what he does, so if you are referred to him, you will be in good hands.

It is important to note that a number of medical specialists are not forthcoming with a lot of information for a patient, so it is important you ask as many questions as you have to, to get the information you need.

This review is for Bendigo Eye Clinic, Bendigo VIC

I was referred to Bendigo Eye Clinic by my GP after I complained about vision difficulties. I was seen by Eye Surgeon Mr Peter Burt. I was diagnosed with cataracts in both eyes, and subsequently had corrective surgery by Mr Burt as a day patient at Bendigo Hospital. The whole process was made easy by the staff, and the after-care following my surgeries was excellent.

The Eye Clinic is always busy and the waiting room is mostly always full, but they are very efficient and are successful at keeping waiting times to a minimum. The staff are very competent, friendly and well organized. Referrals are necessary and Medicare refunds are taken care of at the time of bill payment after you have seen the doctor. They have visiting Doctors from Melbourne who you can also arrange to see including Retina and Glaucoma specialists.
