The Hotel Windsor, Melbourne

The grand old lady lives on. A wonderful heritage hotel that has a long history for customer care. I have memories of the wonderful housekeeper who knew just how each return guest liked their breakfast eggs cooked and served them lovingly with egg cosies on.

Porters who were well trained, friendly and professional welcomed you as you arrived, whisking the car away and getting your bags to the room before you could even check in.

Reservations managers who had a keen eye for special occasions and honeymooning guests upgrading as much as possible to surprise suites with little extras.

Ah yes, The Windsor lived up to their reputation for service in those days (before being taken over by International chain).

I have lost some of my enthusiasm for staying here in the last few years due to the manner of they way they deal with potential bookings on the phone. (Have been dealt with quite rudely on a number of occasions and this front end experience is certainly one that could taint first impressions.)

Standard rooms can be small, if you are staying make the most of the experience by getting the best room you can, enjoy the lounge areas, experience room service etc.

The location is great - top end of Collins opposite parliament house and the beautiful treasury gardens (walks, jogs, picnic, relax).

It is a short walk to all the culture, shopping and famous restaurants of Melbourne. You will also find economical dining choices close by.

After all that I still recommend The Hotel Windsor. Young ones can experience a taste of elegance and the service of days gone by. Many leisure, executive and luxury travellers will feel at home here.

I dragged my husband to high tea at the Windsor during our recent visit to Melbourne and even he enjoyed it! Lovely room, the food was delicious and the sparkling wine and teas were excellent. We were probably extremely lucky to get in as I only rang in the morning for the booking, could only get a table at the 12 noon sitting but that was fine. I think it definitely helped it was a weekday, otherwise we would have had no chance to get in. Definitely worth a visit for a special occasion.

Booked a stay at The Windsor through lastminute.com and got a fantastic deal. A nights stay was about half the normal price.

The hotel is beautiful. We were really impressed when we were greeted at the front entrance by a concierge who took our bags to our room. The room was very comfortable, although the airconditioner wasn't working as well as it should have been.

The only criticism I have is that the fridge had an awful smell, probably because milk that had gone off had been spilt. Otherwise, our stay was perfect.

My wife booked afternoon to as part of my birthday gift. had a great time, dressed to impress and loaded up on their black tea. Loved the whole thing, even though only afternoon tea it was filling. So for a great formal tea, visit The Windsor for a great formal experience. (Favourite was the scones with jam/cream, yum).

Had breakfast at the Windsor and even though it was pretty good I've definitely had better for a similar price. I expected a higher quality and better range given that this hotel is renowned for it's high tea. I was disappointed that you had to have their house tea if you had the buffet breakfast. Any other variety would have cost you extra. Expected more.

The afternoon tea was everything i thought it would be and more, have always seen it on tv shows like getaway etc and finally got some girlfriends and went.

Book in advance, there was a 5 week wait

Perfect scones, I also recommend the Oriental jasmine green tea, perfect way to end your dining experience at this fabulous old fashioned establishment

Higher cost for weekend booking

We stayed in this hotel for two nights as part of a business trip. The room are well appointed if a little tired at times. The ground floor windows were hard to open. The bathrooms and main rooms are well appointed. The in-room bathrobe and toiletries were a nice extra. We visited the tiny gym on the top floor overlooking Parliament to see the spectacular view. The breakfast service was a little slow mid week but on the whole it was a good experience. We would have valued being directed to the internet booth on arrival (near reception).

I read great things about the hotel, even though I travel to Melbourne quite often, never stayed here. That is until my last trip.

Great service and great people. Loved pretty much everything about the place. Price wise, I dont' think I could complain about it. I got in and got out before the holiday season, so it was quite easy on my wallet.

i go to melbourne once a year but this is first time ive stayed in the hotel windsor i was so pleased i did stay there,the room was beautiful with antique lamps,u feel like you are the queen and service of the staff was excellent and the food 5star

I stayed at this Grand and Wonderful old hotel quite a few years ago with my Mum. We felt like we were Queens and the staff treated us like this.

The food was just magnificent and the atmosphere was great. The room we stayed in felt like the Grandest place ever.

A fantastic place to stay.

Great to pledge once in a while.

Well worth the visit.
