Rosenhart Cake Shop, Ballarat

This cute little shop has been around for years, and it still has all the favourites, the pies and pasties are great and at a much reasonable price than others in town.

Rosenharts is one of those great places that is a real local icon and which you have to hope never goes out of business. My mum remembers being young and living in Ballarat and being sent down the lane on numerous occasions to buy half a dozen date scones from this lovely shop, and that would have been 50 years ago. Today it still has that lovely homey feel, and on a recent visit to Ballarat I had a most delicious cottage pie (even if it did start to fall apart half way through), and a pretty good peppermint slice to follow. The prices of their cakes and slices are especially good, compared with what you might find in a more upmarket looking place. But why go for fancy when you can have quality at half the price? Definitely worth dropping in here when you next want a quick and easy lunch, or maybe to pick up something to share with guests. Great little bakery.

We have frequented the afore-mentioned bakery for more years than I care to remember.

In this day and age of artificial cream, chewy and indigestible pastry and hard, wobbly custard, Rosenhart’s cakes are without a doubt, a ‘cut above the rest’. Their pastry (and fillings) are the genuine article, and are essentially ‘just like Nanna made.’

We highly recommend the cream buns (which Mr. Rosenhart himself was happy to make just for us and because he too liked to have an excuse to indulge), the little mushroom tarts, cream puffs, chocolate éclairs and the deliciously soft kisses.

Such time honoured recipes need to be maintained, so that our future generations know what a ‘real’ cake is and not the unnatural, gelatinous, flavourless rubbish that is so frequently dished out at other bakeries.

‘jenj2’ commented on the ‘unfriendly’ service and we recognize that this can indeed be problematic on some occasions however (like with most businesses) this depends on who actually serves you.

In short, Rosenhart’s are very clean and the majority of the cakes are of good old-fashioned quality.

Wide selection of cakes and slices, always hard to make the final choice. Would be one of the better overall selections in Ballarat. All varieties I've tried have been good and the hot pies are fine as well. Reasonalble prices too.

The vegetarian rolls are very nice. Their prices are reasonable and the ladies in the shop are friendly and helpful.. The cakes are ok but nothing special. Good decent local bakery.

I love Rosenhart's pastries. The pasties & pies are just beautiful. The food is always fresh & the prices are very reasonable. I highly recommend Rosenhart's & the staff are always friendly.
