This review is for Skinny Dog Hotel, Kew VIC

verified email - 19 Apr 2012

Had heard good things about the Skinny Dog and finally went along to try it.
The interior is very nice and looks modern but is functional too. A beer garden out the back is great, and there are plenty of large TV's around which had the footy on. Hard to go wrong with that, just make sure you sit facing the TV if you're into it.
The service is good, and it must be said that the staff are all quite good looking, no doubt to match the interior of the venue.
I ordered the chicken parma, which was $25. Note that they also have a half-parma option for $15, which my partner took.
My parma came out on a large oval plate, and the actual piece of chicken was HUGE. It was quite thick and covered most of the plate. It was crumbed well, with some sort of herb which I haven't tried elsewhere. You could easily have eaten the chicken without the toppings.
The cheese and ham on top covered the entire parma, meaning no nude chicken.
The parma was DELICIOUS, and filling. Definitely filling!
The half-parma was really big too, and I would have been satisfied with just that one.
Oh, and sides too!
The sides came in separate bowls - the salad was fresh and tasty, while the chips were really crunchy.
Overall, the Skinny Dog promises to become one of my hot spots.

It is hard to resist going back to Colombo's.
After intending on going to Sofia's (which is next door), we decided to try Colombo's.
It is a large restaurant, with really nice staff. The owner (or at least the manager, I'm not sure) was super friendly and we had a lot of AFL-related banter with him.
The food is quality. I had a large pizza which had AMAZING dough and perfect amount of toppings!
The entree of baked potatoes was so good as well.
Price-wise, it's pretty good compared to other similar places, but VERY good value considering the quality is so good.

In this time of oily and over-topped pizzas, I had a large hawaiian from Jessie's Pizza which was neither of those and taste great!
There was enough topping to satisfy a hungry man and the base had a nice tomato sauce.
The large is a nice sized large pizza, not too small but not too big either.
Would definitely head back to this pizza place for another meal!
Finally, large pizzas are $8.90, all the time which seems like a great price these days.

This review is for Sami's Fish & Chips, Glen Iris VIC

Actually struggled to find a fish & chips shop in the area last night, although driving around today there seem to be a couple we missed.
Anyway, this fish & chip shop is very very good.
The flake wasn't the biggest around but still satisfied me. Batter was really nice, not too much, and the actual fish was up there with the best I've tasted.

Chips were also really nice, good combination of soft and hard ones.
Potato cakes were large and very good also.

In terms of price, it was pretty good, we spent about $50 between 4 of us. If I had one criticism, the flake was $5.50, and considering it's size, was expensive compared to other fish & chip shops.

But I'll definitely head back here next time I'm housesitting in the area :)

This review is for The Terminus Hotel, Clifton Hill VIC

Went to The Terminus after reading it had been awarded 2010 Pub Of The Year by 3AW (http://www.3aw.com.au/blogs/3aw-generic-blog/de-bortoli-pub-of-the-year-2010/20101210-18rvz.html).
It was Friday night dinner time, so it was fairly full, but there was a seat at the bar so I got comfortable.
Ordered a chicken parma (comes with chips and salad by default, not sure if there is a vegie option).
The parma itself was $21. Ordered it and only had to wait about 7 minutes before it was in front of me. Top speed!

The parma was thicker rather than big in diameter, but this didn't fuss me. The chicken was premium quality, so nice! The chips were amazing on the side, as was the salad (standard greens).

The bartender recommended a beer to me, which I took to (Fat Yak), it was great!

I will definitely be heading back to The Terminus in the future for more great food and a quiet beer!

This review is for Mojo's Weird Pizza, Clifton Hill VIC

Ordered a family hawaiian for delivery from here.
I actually used an app on my iPhone called iTakeaway for this, meaning I could pay using credit card straight through my phone.
I selected 6:15pm as the delivery time in the app, however pizza didn't arrive until 6:35.
Mojos only have small, medium and family sizes, meaning if you're after a large you'll either be a bit hungry or have leftovers for breakfast!

The pizza itself was great, they put a massive amount of shredded ham and juicy pineapple on there.

The thing which I loved about this one is that, unlike their Richmond counterpart), the pizza had a 'pressure guard' to stop the toppings going onto the lid of the box.
Sounds simple but its the little things that count.

Wouldn't hesitate to use Mojos Clifton Hill again. Might even try one of their 'weird' pizzas next time!

This review is for Shanghai Village Dumpling, Melbourne VIC

verified email - 27 Jun 2011

Had our first ever dumpling experience at Shanghai Village Dumpling.
Located in Chinatown (the top end), this venue blew our minds.
Walked in and found a table, the waiters were eager to impress.
Received menus straight away.
The menu is quite extensive, but our choice was a plate of fried beef dumplings each and a plate of fried pork & vegie to share. Great choices.
The plates arrived about 10 minutes after we ordered, although on subsequent visits this has varied from 6-10. Very fast service.
They have soy sauce and vinegar sauce at each table, although my personal choice was the chilli sauce. It's not too hot and has a great tang to it. Amazing.

Service-wise, it is good, waiters take your order efficiently.
Drinks arrive before your meals do.

We have been back to this restaurant at various times, including Saturday 5pm, Sunday 3pm, Friday 5pm and Monday 1pm. It gets busy at peak times, although they have a second level of seating.
You could easily be in and out in under 30 mins at this venue.

Price is amazing, we usually get charged $21 between us ($7 per plate, order as per above). Value.

This review is for Mexicali Rose, Richmond VIC

verified email - 05 Jun 2011

Went to Mexicali Rose with the intention of eating in, but as we hadn't booked and it was primetime dinner on a Saturday night, there was going to be a 90 minute wait for a table so we ordered takeaway.
The food was high quality, well cooked and warm when we got home 5 minutes away - something which I find really important, because it means the establishment's containers or storage things are well thought out.
Wouldn't hesitate to recommend this place again and we'll definitely be going back, albeit booking a table first.

This review is for European Bier Cafe, Melbourne VIC

After walking in at 5pm on a Saturday (with a footy match nearby at the MCG that night), we walked to the bar, only to discover 8-10 people waiting there for a drink. There was one staff member on the phone, and we could see a chef in the kitchen. Everybody was confused as to why nobody was serving them, and a couple of people who wanted a meal walked in, sat down, then got up and walked out a few minutes later.
Turns out the gas on their beer taps wasn't working so nobody could have tap beer.
Once we'd established that, there was still only the one bar girl working, until about half an hour later when a second came in. This second bartender had to be talked through everything by the first one, so I'm not sure whether he had just started (first day?) or he didn't usually do bar work there. Either way, we eventually ordered our meals (chicken parma).
The parma was actually very good, thick piece of chicken with Maccas-style fries and salad.
Overall the food was good and the service time after we ordered was not bad (20 minutes).
Would go back again for the food but the service left a lot to be desired, and hopefully this isn't the case next time.

I am often disappointed when attending my local supermarket.
When entering, there are usually no shopping baskets at the front door. To get a basket, I always need to go to the self-serve checkouts (6 of them, for the record).
The thing that frustrates me about this more if that the staff often seem lazy and spend a lot of their time talking to each other or walking around, lost.
In terms of products, it has a good range as most supermarkets do.
Have tried their lunch rolls and they are often quite hard, and lack the softness of other stores.
